Express Recruitment are currently working with a reputable local authority in Sheffield, who are looking to recruit an experienced Employee Relations Manager to act as the first point of contact for managers, employees, and trade union representatives, ensuring current cases are managed with fairness, consistency, and professionalism. Public Sector experience would be beneficial but not essential!
Due to the urgency of the role, our client is looking for candidates who are immediately available (or with a short notice of maximum 2 weeks) and will offer interviews as soon as this week for candidates with the right experience.
Responsibilities- Lead and manage complex ER casework from end to end, including disciplinary, grievance, performance, absence, and capability matters
- Oversee high-risk and sensitive cases, providing balanced, well-reasoned recommendations and ensuring all outcomes are legally compliant and aligned with organisational policy
- Build and maintain strong relationships with trade unions, acting as a credible and trusted contact for consultations, negotiations, and ongoing engagement
- Partner with investigators, HR colleagues, and senior stakeholders to ensure thorough, timely, and fair case handling
- Provide expert advice and coaching to managers, helping them navigate challenging ER situations and make informed, confident decisions
- Promote a positive ER culture, encouraging early resolution, constructive communication, and consistency in people management
- CIPD Qualification (Level 5 or above) – or equivalent HR qualification, demonstrating strong foundational and professional HR knowledge
- Advanced Employee Relations expertise, demonstratable experience of leading complex casework
- Strong Employment Law knowledge – up to date with current legislation and able to apply it pragmatically in a fast-paced environment
- Exceptional communication skills with the ability to engage, challenge, and build credibility with managers, employees, and trade unions
- Stakeholder & Relationship Management – skilled in partnering with leaders, unions, and HR teams to deliver fair, consistent outcomes
Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm
Salary: up to £400 per day (dependent on experience)
Location: Sheffield, South Yorkshire
Job Type: Temporary for approx. 6-12 months, potential to extend
