The Estates Operative provides practical and compassionate support across the hospice, ensuring dignity, safety, and respect for patients, families, and staff at all times. This role combines hands‑on operational duties with sensitive responsibilities, including work within the mortuary, where professionalism and empathy are essential.
Key Responsibilities- Transport patients, equipment, and supplies safely and efficiently.
- Set up rooms and public areas for clinical or family use.
- Respond promptly to porter service requests, prioritising urgent needs.
- Assist with waste collection and disposal.
- Support fleet management and carry out vehicle checks.
- Perform basic maintenance tasks (e.g., lightbulb changes, furniture assembly).
- Assist with event setups, including the Festival of Light.
- Transfer deceased patients respectfully in line with hospice protocols.
- Prepare viewing areas for families, ensuring privacy and dignity.
- Liaise with funeral directors and maintain accurate records.
- Adhere to health and safety policies, including infection control and manual handling.
- Complete statutory checks and report incidents promptly.
- Support risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Communicate sensitively with patients, families, and colleagues.
- Work collaboratively across departments to ensure smooth operations.
- Experience in a customer‑facing or operational role.
- Understanding of basic health and safety principles.
- Ability to prioritise tasks and work as part of a team.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Previous experience as a porter or in a healthcare setting.
- Basic maintenance skills and experience supporting events.
- Mortuary care or bereavement support training.
- Compassionate and respectful approach.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work flexibly and independently.
