Base salary will be based on experience and skills; the pay range is £38,784 - £47,389. The role is full‑time and will run from 1st October 2026 to 30th September 2028.

The post is funded by the UKRI Grant “Motivic in variants and birational geometry of simple normal crossing degenerations”. You will work on a project with Prof. Evgeny Shinder, covering themes such as birational maps, singularities, motives, log geometry and derived categories.
Main duties and responsibilities- Contribute to research on singularities, Chow groups, rationality problems, and log‑geometry
- Give and attend local working seminars and collaborate with colleagues
- Prepare high‑quality research publications and maintain systematic records of scientific outputs
- Attend international conferences and deliver talks on the research group’s work
- Plan personal research schedules and workloads within the project timeline to meet milestones
- Monitor and check research results, adjusting plans as new developments arise
- Read academic papers, journals and textbooks to stay current and brief colleagues
- Carry out administrative roles as required
- Provide a small amount of undergraduate teaching (e.g., tutorial work)
- Perform other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post

Essential criteria- PhD (or equivalent) in pure mathematics, or be close to completion
- Expertise in algebraic geometry, including motives, log‑geometry or derived categories
- Post‑doctoral research experience
- Experience of giving presentations and writing research publications for peer‑reviewed journals
- Ability to handle multiple simultaneous demands and activities
- Broad interests across pure mathematics
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
- Ability to conduct innovative research in pure mathematics
- Ability to organise resources, plan and progress work activities
- Ability to show personal initiative, reliability and attention to detail
