University Teacher in Clinical Psychology

The School of Psychology at the University of Sheffield delivers postgraduate and undergraduate programmes across a range of academic and clinical/applied areas of psychology. Our teaching is research‑led, equipping graduates with an advanced understanding and the key skills needed in their chosen careers. The Clinical and Applied Psychology Unit operates within the School of Psychology and delivers a range of applied postgraduate courses, including the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy).

We are seeking to recruit a Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP) registered clinical psychologist to this University Teacher post. This post is open to full‑time and part‑time applicants, with the primary focus being teaching on, and helping to run, the DClinPsy programme. The successful applicant will contribute to the high‑quality teaching and training that is provided to Clinical Psychology trainees.

There may also be opportunities to contribute to other postgraduate and undergraduate teaching that takes place across programmes within the School. We are particularly keen to recruit colleagues who are accredited as either a family/systematic therapist (via AFT) or as a CBT therapist (via BABCP), as the DClinPsy programme is developing formal therapy training pathways for our DClinPsy trainees.

Main Duties and Responsibilities Teaching
  • Design modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level – identifying learning objectives, determining appropriate curricula, selecting teaching methods, resources and reading, and producing study material.
  • Deliver teaching courses, which includes preparing teaching material, communicating subject matter and encouraging critical discourse to develop rational thinking. An interest in teaching CBT or family therapy would be welcomed for this position.
  • Coordinate team teaching, liaising with academic staff and/or postgraduate assistants to ensure the course complements other courses taken by students.
  • Carry out assessment for courses – designing assessment instruments and criteria, marking assessments, ensuring adequate moderation, providing written/oral feedback, considering student circumstances in assessment, and collating and providing final assessments of students.
  • Carry out course evaluation – facilitating student feedback, reflecting on own teaching design and delivery, and implementing ideas for improving own performance.
  • Take a supporting role in guiding students through their studies, including as an Academic Tutor, and refer students to the appropriate authority for further guidance if necessary.
Administration and Leadership
  • Contribute to the life of the School of Psychology, the Faculty and the wider University community through participation in and membership of School/Faculty Committees.
  • Develop a strong national and international professional profile through external examining, organising conferences and various committees.
  • Engage in teaching‑related development work – self‑generated through scholarly pursuits and innovation in teaching and administration.
  • Carry out other roles as allocated by the DClinPsy Programme Director which contribute to the effective running of the programme, such as assisting with trainee selection processes.
  • Plan and prioritise own daily work, forward‑planning up to five years for some tasks; for teaching, plan up to one year ahead unless significant changes occur, then plan up to two years ahead.
  • Deal with reactive requests daily relating to teaching, supervising research staff and students and administrative tasks.
  • Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.
