Overview

We have an exciting opportunity in the School of Law at the University of Sheffield to recruit a Lecturer in Law (open‑ended) from 1 September 2026. The role involves research‑led teaching and requires the ability to teach modules in property law, encompassing land law and equity and trusts at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Research

  • Determine research objectives and initiate and implement a programme of research that enhances the international standing of the School.
  • Identify appropriate funding sources and prepare proposals for funding bodies.
  • Conduct and disseminate innovative research of internationally excellent standard.
  • Undertake research and knowledge exchange activities with demonstrable effects on society, culture, public policy or services, the law, health, environment or quality of life beyond academia.
  • Involvement in professional activities and national and international bodies.

Education

  • Design, develop and deliver teaching on modules across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, coordinating team teaching, preparing material, communicating subject matter, encouraging critical discourse and rational thinking, observing students, responding to questions and contingencies.
  • Carry out assessments for modules, including designing instruments and criteria, marking, ensuring moderation, providing written or oral feedback and collating final assessments.
  • Supervise and assess undergraduate and postgraduate dissertation students and doctoral students.
  • Carry out module evaluation, facilitating student feedback, reflecting on own teaching design and delivery, and implementing improvements.

Leadership and Administration

  • Provide pastoral and academic support for students as an Academic Tutor.
  • Contribute to the life of the School, Faculty and University community by taking on leadership roles, committee work and policy development.
  • Carry out other duties commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.
  • Make ethical decisions, model inclusive and collegiate behaviour, embed the University’s sustainability strategy into work activities where possible.
Person Specification

Essential Criteria
  • PhD in a relevant subject area or close to submission.
  • Proven teaching ability in property law, ideally with a recognised teaching qualification.
  • Evidence of research recognised internationally for originality, significance and rigour.
  • Potential to write and submit high‑quality proposals for funded research.
  • Experience maintaining a research network of contacts in the area.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for liaising with colleagues, students and external stakeholders.
  • Experience taking principal responsibility for projects and working collaboratively.
  • Proven ability to work to and meet deadlines.
  • Capacity to work effectively with a diverse group of students and staff.
  • Experience designing, leading and delivering modules to a high standard.
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience supervising and assessing taught student research projects/dissertations.
