Newly hired officers with no previous experience will attend the Johnson County Regional Police Academy and officers with qualifying previous experience will start in the Field Training Program. Shawnee offers numerous special assignment positions for officers that include the following:

• K-9 officer
• Detective
• Criminal Interdiction Officer
• Narcotics Officer
• Warrant Officer
• Traffic Safety Officer
• Motorcycle Officer
• Bicycle Patrol
• School Resource Officer
• Community Outreach Officer
• Tactical Team Officer
• Promotional opportunities

• Valid driver s license and an acceptable driving record
• High school diploma or the equivalent
• Legal to work in the US
• Minimum 21 years of age by start date
• Successful completion of physical ability test, background investigation including a job fit assessment, polygraph examination, pre-employment physical and pre-employment drug screen
• Successful completion of oral examination by Staff and Police Chief
• Kansas residency not required

An employee of this classification performs duties related to public safety through enforcement of laws and ordinances, public education, and hazard correction.
