Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, HVAC Tech / Heating Engineer, Building Maintenance
This position is responsible for assisting with operation, maintenance and repair of the life support, building, and mechanical systems at the Alaska Sea Life Center.
Education/Training Requirements:High school diploma or GED with training or certification as a building controls technician, electrician, refrigeration mechanic or other recognized trade or the equivalent.
Operations Technician 2:Completion of an Aquatic Animal Life Support Operators (AALSO) certificate or training or certification as a building controls technician, electrician, refrigeration mechanic or other recognized trade and two years’ experience in a similar position or the equivalent.
Operations Technician 3:In addition to the above,
Completion of Aquatic Animal Life Support Operators (AALSO) II certificate or training or certification as a building controls technician, electrician, refrigeration mechanic or other recognized trade and four years’ experience in a similar position or the equivalent.
Supervisory experience preferred.
- Follows scheduled routine for Operation rounds and mechanical checks.
- Maintains familiarity with all aspects of Operations including electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
- Visually monitors water quality in habitats and aquarium systems.
- Assists with maintenance animal life support systems (LSS).
- Demonstrates an excellent working knowledge of the safe and proper use of hand tools, power tools and test equipment used in daily activities.
- Maintains a clean, safe working environment including office space.
- Assists in the fabrication and repair of exhibits.
- Assists with the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of major plant equipment.
- Must be fully capable of reading technical drawings, technical specification, and written repair/maintenance procedures with minimum supervision.
- Supports the routine preventive and breakdown maintenance on all aspects of the ASLC building and its operating systems which may involve lifting, pushing, carrying, and pulling up to 50 lbs of equipment. Including but not limited to electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and building construction.
- Supports the maintenance of the grounds, roof, sidewalks, and pier in safe and clean condition.
- Works with other relevant departments to ensure that exhibit galleries are always clean and well maintained.
- Works with the entire maintenance team to ensure that all outside traffic able areas are safe and free from snow and ice. Shovels snow and dispenses ice melt and/or grit which may involve standing, crouching, and sometimes stooping on uneven or slippery surfaces.
- With supervisor’s approval, assists Research and Husbandry Departments with mechanical tasks.
- Keeps proper records in accordance with ASLC policies and permits.
- Maintains familiarity with SDS system and hazardous communications.
- Works a rotating shift, an on‑call schedule, and/or overtime as needed.
- Maintains a valid driver’s license.
- Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, goodwill, cooperation, and providing high standards of service.
- Complies with all Alaska Sea Life Center policies, procedures, and programs.
In addition to the above Essential Duties,
- Assists with supervision of personnel matters within the Operations Division.
- Assigns and checks work, establishes schedules, sets deadlines, and delegates authority.
- Makes personnel recommendations to the Operations Manager.
