Overview
Under the direction of the Fire Marshal, the Inspector is responsible for ensuring compliance with the County’s currently adopted fire and safety codes. The primary areas of responsibility include inspecting new and existing structures, completing fire investigations, reviewing construction plans, and ensuring safety compliance at fire sites. The position also involves conducting public education programs, consulting with the public, and executing necessary reporting.
Job performance is evaluated by the Deputy Chief – Fire Marshal based on the accuracy of inspections, thoroughness of investigations, effectiveness of public education programs, and the quality of reporting and consultations.
- Performs technical inspections of public, commercial, industrial, residential, and other buildings and premises to ensure compliance with current adopted fire codes and regulations; prepares required documentation and performs follow-up inspections to ensure corrective action for non-compliance.
- Reviews construction and site plans for fire code and regulation compliance; makes recommendations for changes as needed.
- Assists with conducting fire investigations to determine cause and origin of fires; collects and preserves physical and photographic evidence as required in suspected arson cases; maintains appropriate records of fire losses and investigations.
- Serves as Incident Safety Officer as needed; attends fires to ensure personnel comply with safety codes and regulations in the execution of duties; performs the duties of a firefighter as needed.
- Develops, organizes, and conducts fire prevention/education classes and activities for the public.
- Performs office tasks such as issuing permits for burning and fireworks, preparing grant proposals, performing data entry, or managing work-related phone calls.
- Gathers and maintains information and data to support periodic and special reports documenting activities for the area of responsibility.
- Attends or conducts staff and other professional meetings to exchange information; attends in-service training and technical or professional classes, seminars, or conferences to improve technical or professional skills.
- Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned.
- High school diploma or GED or one-year related experience and/or training or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Possession of Fire Inspector I license through the State of Tennessee or current International Code Council (ICC).
- Possession of or ability to obtain within one year the following licenses or certifications:
Firefighter I (IFSAC/Pro Board or equivalent);
Fire Investigation for First Responder;
Emergency Medical Responder. - Possession of or ability to obtain within three years the following licenses or certifications:
Fire & Life Safety Educator I (IFSAC/Pro Board or equivalent);
Incident Safety Officer (IFSAC/Pro Board or equivalent). - Possession of or ability to obtain within five years the following licenses or certifications:
Fire Officer I (IFSAC/Pro Board or equivalent). - Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class D Tennessee driver’s license that has not been revoked for any cause within the past five years.
- Ability to pass a physical and drug screen by a licensed physician.
- Possession of the following licenses or certifications is preferred:
Fire Investigator I (IFSAC/Pro Board or equivalent);
Fire Inspector II (IFSAC/Pro Board or equivalent).
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Competencies- Thorough knowledge of National Incident Management System, International Fire Codes, applicable laws and ordinances, modern fire suppression techniques, and emergency medical services principles.
- Considerable knowledge of fire prevention methods and state and county regulations applicable to firefighting and prevention.
- Considerable knowledge of the proper maintenance, retention, and use of fire records and their application to the solution of fire related programs and issues.
