Environment Crime Officer – Area Enforcement Team
The Environment Agency is seeking three highly motivated individuals to work as Environmental Crime Officers (ECOs) across Kent, South London and East Sussex. ECOs tackle serious and significant environmental crime, primarily focusing on high‑risk illegal waste sites and disrupting illegal operations.
Responsibilities- Investigate illegal waste sites, collect evidence, interview suspects and prepare case files.
- Develop and implement actions to disrupt criminal activities across the area.
- Establish strong working relationships with colleagues, partners, police, local authorities and other agencies.
- Attend and co‑locate with the enforcement team, participate in meetings and maintain high visibility across the area.
- Respond promptly to incidents, including routine and emergency situations.
- Travel regularly (including possible overnight stays) and work within a hybrid model of office and field work.
- Obtain National Security Vetting to SC and Non‑Police Personnel Vetting 2 clearance before starting.
- Background in environmental regulation, intelligence‑led enforcement or investigation.
- Experience collaborating with partner organisations such as police, councils and government agencies.
- Experience using intelligence products to identify enquiry lines and disruption opportunities.
- Full UK driver’s licence; role requires regular travel.
- Desirable: knowledge of legislation governing criminal investigations, including the Environmental Permitting Regulations, Environmental Protection Act, Police and Criminal Evidence Act, Criminal Procedures and Investigations Act and Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act.
- Required evidence of National Security Vetting to SC and‑Police Personnel Vetting 2 clearance.
