Under the general direction of the WIC Nutrition Assistant II/III, the WIC Nutrition Assistant performs general reception/PBX and clerical duties, screens telephone calls, retrieves WIC applicants/participants computer record and provides general information; and performs referrals, issuance of food instruments, appointments scheduling and income and residence screening.
Responsibilities- Work as a team member; greet applicants/participants in person or on the telephone; accept information required for certification or assessment.
- Input information into an electronic family/individual record through the WIC MIS application and a paper file.
- Interview applicants/participants to include category, income, and residence screening;
- Make referrals, issue the food instruments, schedule appointments, and conduct courtesy/no-show appointment reminders.
- Protect, promote, and support breastfeeding; understand breast milk is the optimal nutrition for the first year of life; avoid materials promoting human milk substitutes and refer breastfeeding questions to appropriate team members.
- Performs Reception/PBX and clerical duties, including answering the telephone, screening calls, greeting applicants/participants, and handling information required for certification or assessment.
- Enter all data and maintain records through WIC MIS, including making referrals, issuing food instruments, scheduling appointments, and screening for category, income, and residence.
- Answer telephone and utilize WIC MIS to screen applicants by category, income, and residence; schedule/reschedule appointments for applicants and/or participants.
- Verifies WIC participant signatures on Food Instrument logs; maintains check stock supply and security.
- Prepare certification packets, stamps/highlights referrals, and prepare pamphlet packets; provide translation for Spanish-speaking participants as needed.
- Participates in continuing education through required trainings/workshops; stay updated with WIC Policies and Procedures Manual (WPPM).
- Performs other duties related to WIC Program services as assigned by the Nutrition Assistant II/III.
- Attends and actively participates in department/program/employee meetings and required activities.
- Attends workshops/seminars to increase skills and knowledge for effective care, treatment, and leadership.
- Supports the health center by working flexible or extended hours when necessary.
- Supports the UHC WIC Program by traveling to other UHC WIC Sites when staffing needs dictate.
- Complies with organizational mission and objectives to provide health care access and support services for all community members.
- Completes required continuing education annually.
- Maintains confidentiality and respect for information; abides by confidentiality policies and WPPM.
- Maintains professionalism and positive demeanor toward staff and patients; promotes open communication with other programs/departments.
- High School Graduate or GED required.
- Possess a valid driver's license.
- Minimum 1 year of related work experience in interviewing, individual/group nutrition education, or consumer education (desirable).
- Minimum 1 year of work experience in computer basics and data entry; customer service work preferred.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)
- Able to quickly build and maintain rapport with participants and team members from differing backgrounds; team player

- Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds and push up to 50 pounds (on wheels).
- Must be able to hear and speak clearly to communicate with staff and patients.
- Must be able to read memos, computer screens, and administrative documents.
- Must have high manual dexterity and be able to reach, bend, squat, sit, stand, stoop, crouch, twist/turn.
- Travel may be required for this position.
The hourly wage range that UHC reasonably expects to pay for the position upon hire starts at $21.00 per hour. Salaries depend on knowledge, skills, and experience.
