Description:

Med/Surg Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles.
In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of Med/Surg Nurses include consults and coordination with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.
They prepare and administer medications (orally, subcutaneously, IV, and IM) and record prescribed medications.
The nurses report adverse reactions to medications or treatments according to policy regarding medication administration.
Educating patients on surgical procedures is also part of their role.
They record patients' medical information and vital signs and monitor specialized equipment used on patients.
The nurses interpret and record electronic displays and initiate corrective actions for adverse symptomatology.
Providing bedside care for a wide variety of medical patients, including pre- and post-surgery patients, is essential.
They initiate patient education plans as prescribed by physicians.
The nurses teach patients and significant others how to manage their illness or injury, including post-treatment home care needs.
Changing dressings, inserting catheters, starting IVs, and preparing equipment are also duties performed.
They assist physicians during examinations and treatments and respond to life-saving situations based on nursing standards and protocols.
Participation in discharge planning is an important facet of their work.
Utilizing time management skills and accurately documenting care information in a timely manner is required.
The nurses perform other position-related duties as assigned, depending on the assignment setting.
