Summary
North Cascades Institute, in conjunction with the U.S. Forest Service, is seeking a qualified, enthusiastic individual to coordinate the dissemination of public information regarding recreation and current policies/permits, and to maintain and sell retail products related to the area.
Job DescriptionThis is a seasonal/temporary, non‑exempt position, part‑time, with a trial period from March 1 to June 30 and potential to extend year‑round. The position is based at the Sedro‑Woolley Administrative Office.
North Cascades Institute is a nonprofit educational association contracted with the U.S. Forest Service and North Cascades National Park to operate seven retail stores within and adjacent to the National Park and Mt. Baker‑Snoqualmie Forest District. The Sedro‑Woolley location emphasizes public communications and retail operations. The employee will often work alone, with U.S. Forest Service staff available when needed.
Responsibilities- Provide excellent customer service
- Familiarity with National Park and National Recreation Area trails and campgrounds
- Communicate effectively and patiently, especially during busier periods
- Handle sales transactions
- Maintain an orderly, attractive retail area and timely merchandise displays
This position begins March 1 and runs through June 30 on a trail basis, with the possibility of extension year‑round. Preferable availability is Tuesday through Saturday. Regular hours are 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. (with a half‑hour paid lunch break). The opportunity requires a flexible commitment and is primarily "On Call" with no guaranteed hours.

Required Experience- Exemplary customer service skills in a fast‑paced environment
- Excellent communication skills
- Superior organizational skills, ability to multi‑task and prioritize among various tasks
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently
- Accuracy and thoroughness in following procedures and record‑keeping
- Administrative experience and direct customer service experience
- Ability to move from task to task with frequent interruptions
- Must own reliable transportation
- Able to lift up to 40 pounds
- Valid driver’s license and driving record check with no more than one moving violation in the past three years and no DUI, reckless driving, or serious moving violations
- Final offers of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of a background check that may include employment history, national criminal background check, national sex‑offender registry search, and a driving history check
Compensation:
This is a seasonal/temporary, part‑time, non‑exempt position. Wage is $19.00 per hour.
- Sick leave accrued at a rate of .04615 per hour
- Vacation leave accrued at a rate of .01925 per hour
- Option to defer compensation as a pre‑tax deferral in our retirement plan
- Ability to participate in Institute pro deals
Benefits are prorated for employees working less than 40 hours per week.
