QualificationsTo qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement – 01/21/2026. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against prescribed screen‑out elements; those who meet the screen‑out elements are considered for further rating while those who do not are rated ineligible and eliminated from consideration. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your questionnaire responses must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.
Driver's License Requirement:
Must possess a valid Driver's License to operate a motor vehicle. Please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. You will be required to show your valid commercial driver's license at the time of your interview.
Physical Requirements:
Work requires reaching, turning or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate controls; assisting patients with various medical conditions and disabilities; stooping, bending, lifting, and climbing with appropriate securing devices. Lifts and carries objects weighing up to 50 pounds and heavier using prescribed safety procedures and proper lifting methods. Must drive for a minimum of a four‑hour period and stay mentally alert, pulling over if alertness is compromised.
Must pass a VA Physical and adhere to all VA and DOT drug and alcohol testing and guidelines.
Working Conditions:
Drivers work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of weather, exposed to dirt, fumes, and the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents during loading and unloading. Must be able to drive in rural areas, congested metropolitan traffic, and construction zones. Must safely handle patients in stretchers or wheelchairs during loading and unloading from vans and buses.
The employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, shift work, and overtime in emergencies.
- The purpose of this position is to operate patient transport vehicles, including emergency vehicles, patient transport vans/buses and other transport vehicles capable of carrying up to 8 or more passengers to and from VA Medical Center facilities, private healthcare facilities, patient homes, train stations, bus stations, and airports.
- Incumbent drives predetermined and/or scheduled routes or special runs.
- Receives work assignments and direction regarding work methods, procedures and schedules from either the Transportation Coordinator and/or the Mobility Manager.
- Arrives at and departs from pickup and discharge points at scheduled times.
- Reads installation maps and judges road/traffic conditions to determine the shortest and safest route.
- Enforces passenger safety and seatbelt use.
- Uses multiple variations of the Mobile Data Computer (MDC) in and out of the vehicles for assigned trips and duties daily.
- Loads and unloads patients and medical supplies.
- Performs operator maintenance such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires, cleaning and washing vehicles, and performing inspection checklists to ensure safe and proper operation.
- Maintains records and documents such as operator inspection checklists/forms and accident/incident reports.
- Uses two‑way radios (or other device) to maintain communication with dispatcher/supervisor on assignments and locations.
- Possesses a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement, which is required for the position.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Designated drug‑testing position:
Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. - Work schedule:
