Position Overview

Under general direction of the Leisure Services Director, Public Facilities Superintendent, or designee, the purpose of the position is to assist a wide variety of skilled and/or semiskilled maintenance and repair work in one or more trade disciplines. Employees in this position perform physical labor at a work site. Employees in this classification must demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities of a Lead Carpenter in maintaining and repairing all docks, piers, and all city structures and coordinating the repair and new construction of the public infrastructure as well as operating a variety of equipment in construction, operation, and repair.

Employee must exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing assigned tasks as well as the ability to work unsupervised. Performs related work as directed.

Responsibilities
  • Assists the Superintendent to oversee, guide and direct the work productivity at job sites of laborers and maintenance workers.
  • Using a variety of trade skills maintains and repairs City structures, facilities, and equipment.
  • Proficient in carpentry, plumbing repair and electrical work up to 240 volts, and working knowledge of other maintenance repairs.
  • Organizes and plans the maintenance of city infrastructures such as docks, piers, buildings, pavilions, etc.; and structures in trade work including but not limited to carpentry, painting, roofing, masonry, electrical, plumbing and locksmith work.
  • Locates gas, telephone, power, television, water and sewer lines from appropriate sources prior to the start of any excavation projects.
  • Assists in responding to citizen complaints.
  • Inspects and maintains equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use. Refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
  • Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects.
  • Control traffic passing near, in, or around work zones.
  • Erect or dismantle scaffolding, shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps, or other temporary structures.
  • Load, unload or identify building materials, machinery, or tools, distributing them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans or specifications.
  • Measure, mark, or record openings or distances to layout areas where construction or work will be performed.
  • Position or dismantle forms for pouring concrete, using saws, hammers, nails, or bolts.
  • Position, join, align, or seal structural components, such as concrete wall sections or pipes.
  • Read plans, instructions, or specifications to determine work activities.
  • Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, or adjustment of machinery, equipment or materials.
  • Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the Public Facilities Department.
  • Operates a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment to include large earth moving and excavation equipment used in construction and maintenance.
  • Insures that all work performed adheres to established safety standards, building codes and regulations, and engineering standards where applicable.
  • Performs preventive maintenance according to assigned schedules or when directed.
  • May work in a variety of confined or enclosed spaces, i.e., ceilings, duct systems.
  • Communicates effectively and fluently both orally and in writing.
  • Maintains an effective working relationship with residents, departments and staff. May be required to assist other departments when necessary.
  • Assists other trade’s personnel in two (2) or more of the trade disciplines to provide essential knowledge, skills, and abilities in all trades utilized by the unit.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.
