Overview

Updated January 2026, starting in February. The Youth Head Coach leads the HMB Youth Teams Program, a subdivision of the HMB Programs Department. In this position, you’ll coach our teams of athletes, develop training plans, refine curriculum, manage assistant coaches, ensure athlete safety, coordinate competitions, and communicate with parents to foster growth in technique, strength, and mental resilience within a positive, inclusive environment.

Workload

Part-time, minimum 16 hours instruction and administration. Possibility of reaching full-time with additional responsibilities.

Pay

Pay-rate: $23-$26 DOE

Availability

Must-have Availability:
Weekday afternoons and evenings (starting at 4 PM)

Responsibilities
  • Program Leadership & Development:
    Create and implement seasonal/session training curricula for various skill levels. Set goals for individual climbers and the team, focusing on skill, physical, and mental development. Lead and mentor other coaches, ensuring consistent quality and adherence to policies. Develop and implement new youth programs and classes under the Program Manager’s guidance.
  • Coaching & Athlete Support:
    Provide direct coaching, offering constructive feedback on technique, movement, and tactics. Develop personalized training plans and track athlete progress. Foster a positive, supportive, and inclusive culture that promotes teamwork and a love for climbing.
  • Safety &

    Risk Management:

    Uphold strict safety protocols and act as staff lead for incidents. Ensure compliance with organizational, USAC, and Safe Sport guidelines.
  • Logistics & Administration:
    Coordinate competition schedules, travel, and participation in local, regional, and national events. Manage team registration, communication, and administrative tasks. Prepare program performance analyses. Manage program budget in collaboration with the Programs Manager.
  • Communication & Community:
    Attend weekly, monthly, and quarterly meetings with the Programs Manager and/or Leadership. Report program status, needs, and development plans to the Programs Manager. Report and coordinate development plans in collaboration with other departments, such as route setting, marketing, customer support, etc. Maintain professional, clear communication with managers, coaches, athletes and parents about progress, events, and expectations. Represent the organization and build relationships with the climbing community.
Essential

Skills
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Expert knowledge of climbing techniques, training principles, and safety standards.
  • Ability to coach and motivate a diverse range of ages and abilities.
  • Self-motivation, initiative, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Qualifications
  • Proven experience in coaching competitive climbing, with a strong understanding of climbing techniques, training methodologies, and athlete development.
  • Previous experience in leading youth sports programs, with a preference for climbing-specific experience.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple classes, coaches, and events simultaneously.
Certifications
  • USAC Level 2 Coach, First Aid/CPR, and Safe Sport.
  • Certifications must be acquired by March 2026. HMB will facilitate the training if necessary.
