The Buildings & Grounds Division (B&G) is responsible for the Capitol Campus and Department of Enterprise Services (DES) managed building operations, stewardship, and historic preservation. B&G provides service to over 42 agencies, maintains, operates and preserves the 486-acre state Capitol Campus in Olympia, including more than 28 buildings, 18 public monuments, over 6,000 parking stalls, four state parks and a 260-acre lake.

B&G executes these responsibilities through the following service programs:
Facilities Operations, Grounds Operations, Leadership and Admin, Maintenance & Repairs, Support Services (Custodial).

About the Opportunity:

As an HVAC Technician, you will plan, perform, and oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of a variety of HVAC systems and components serving DES-owned facilities in Thurston County.
Some of What You’ll Enjoy Doing Includes:

  • Operate and maintain all aspects of HVAC systems, including performing necessary alterations and repairs.
  • Manage the installation, diagnosis, and repair of steam heating system components, such as high-pressure boilers and the central steam distribution network.
  • Maintain and repair commercial refrigeration equipment essential for air conditioning, ventilation, and chilled water systems.
  • Manage and troubleshoot building control systems (including electrical, electronic, and pneumatic components) by monitoring, analyzing, adjusting, and maintaining sensors and actuators, and by laying out and installing new temperature and humidity controls.
  • Develop cost estimates for projects and systems repairs.
  • Other duties as needed.
Required Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, a candidate must possess one of the following options:

[OPTION 1]
  • Four (4) years of experience in the operation and repair of commercial HVAC and HVAC/R equipment and/or high-pressure boilers.
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools required to accomplish HVAC work.
[OPTION 2]
  • One (1) year of experience as a Stationary Engineer 2 within State service.
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools required to accomplish HVAC work.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to perform skilled HVAC work.
  • Knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the HVAC trade.
  • Knowledge of current HVAC, electrical codes, and electrical safety precautions.
  • Ability to work from blueprints, plans, and sketches; and estimate labor and materials required to accomplish the work.
