Summary

The Department of Local Services seeks dedicated, hardworking Road Maintenance Workers to perform skilled tasks related to roadway construction, repair, and maintenance. The role requires strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and adaptability to changing conditions.

Job Duties
  • Ensure crew and public safety by providing appropriate traffic control measures, including flagging, signs, cones, and barricades.
  • Safely operate a variety of vehicles, including pickup/trailer combinations below 26,000 lbs GVW.
  • Provide guidance to Road Maintenance Worker I’s.
  • Prepare surfaces for asphalt overlay and repairs, perform shoulder maintenance, and install guardrails.
  • Complete repairs and minor construction of drainage structures (pipes, manholes, catch basins, etc.) and clean ditches, gutters, culverts, and drainage tiles.
  • Plant vegetation, cut and remove brush to maintain clear and safe areas.
  • Operate trimmer/weed‑eater, chainsaw, and other landscape equipment for long periods in varying weather.
  • Assist in the operation of Vactor equipment.
  • Shovel snow, gravel, asphalt, and dirt; rake asphalt and tar pavement joints.
  • Dig post‑holes and set posts.
  • Read and interpret various road maps and construction blueprints.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
  • Demonstrated experience in construction, road maintenance, or heavy manual labor; or completion of a recognized vocational trades program.
  • Traffic control knowledge and familiarity with setting up traffic control measures on streets and highways.
  • Skill in minor construction and repairs on drainage infrastructure (pipes, manholes, catch basins, culverts).
  • Strong knowledge and practical experience with hand tools and equipment used in construction and road maintenance.
  • Understanding of and adherence to safety protocols and regulations (fall protection, confined space entry, hazardous materials).
  • Ability to read and interpret maps and perform basic geographic orientation.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Capacity to work outdoors in varying weather, including harsh conditions.
  • Demonstrated fairness, respect, and inclusiveness; experience working with diverse populations and providing excellent customer service.
  • Team player who values reliability and collaboration.
Additional Requirements
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License or ability to obtain one prior to start date.
  • Valid Washington State Flagging Certificate, CPR and First Aid certifications, or ability to obtain them within two months of hire.
  • Successful completion of a pre‑employment physical examination.
Work Environment / Physical Demands
  • Must be able to lift, carry, move, or handle up to 50 pounds.
  • Must perform duties involving physical labor, including bending, kneeling, standing, reaching, climbing, stooping, squatting, pushing, and twisting.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in inclement weather.
Work Schedule

Four ten‑hour days in the spring/summer (Mon–Thu, 6:00 am–4:30 pm) and five eight‑hour days in the fall/winter (Mon–Fri, 7:00 am–3:30 pm). Non‑exempt; eligible for overtime pay with supervisor approval.

Work Location

Primary base in Renton, WA, with outlying facilities in Black Diamond, Skykomish, Fall City, and Redmond.

Emergency Designation Status

First Responder: responsible for protecting and preserving life, property, evidence, environment, and restoring order during early incident stages.

Union Membership

Local 117 Teamsters.
