The Department of Local Services is looking for dedicated hardworking Road Maintenance Workers to become part of our team. In this role, you will perform a wide variety of skilled tasks related to roadway construction, repair and maintenance. This work involves ensuring the safety of crews and the traveling public by providing proper traffic control measures, operating vehicles and equipment, performing roadway repairs, and seasonal tasks such as snow and ice removal.

- Ensure the safety of crews and the public by providing appropriate traffic control measures on streets and highways, including flagging, and placing signs, cones and barricades as needed.
- Safely operate a variety of vehicles including pickup/trailer combinations below 26,000lbs GVW.
- Provide guidance and direction to Road Maintenance Worker I's.
- Prepare surfaces for asphalt overlay and repairs, perform shoulder maintenance, and install guardrails.
- Complete assigned repairs and minor construction of drainage structures, including pipes, catch basins, and manholes; clean ditches, gutters, culverts, catch basins and drainage tiles.
- Plant vegetation and cuttings; cut and remove brush to maintain clear and safe areas.
- Safely operate trimmer/weed-eater, chainsaw, and other landscape equipment for long durations in varying weather.
- Assist in the operation of Vactor equipment.
- Shovel snow, gravel, asphalt, and dirt; rake asphalt and tar pavement joints.
- Dig post-holes and set posts.
- Read and interpret various road maps and construction blueprints.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Demonstrated experience in construction, road maintenance, or other heavy manual labor areas or completion of a recognized vocational trades program.
- Possess traffic control knowledge and familiarity with setting up traffic control measures on streets and highways.
- Skilled in performing minor construction and repairs on drainage infrastructure (pipes, manholes, catch basins, culverts, etc.).
- Possess strong knowledge and practical experience in the safe operation of a wide range of hand tools and equipment commonly used in construction, road maintenance, and other physically demanding, labor-intensive environments.
- Understand and follow safety protocols and regulations related to construction, and road maintenance, including fall protection, confined space entry, and the handling of hazardous materials.
- Have the ability to read and interpret maps, e.g., Thomas Brothers or similar, and apply basic geographic orientation.
- Possess strong communication skills and the ability to effectively follow both verbal and written instructions.
- Capable of working outdoors in varying weather, including harsh or inclement conditions.
- Demonstrate behaviors that include fairness, respect, and inclusiveness.
- Have experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and providing excellent customer service.
- Is a team player and understands the value of working together and being reliable.
- Have a valid Washington State Driver's License, or the ability to obtain one prior to start date.
