Sequencing Sales Specialist

The Sequencing Sales Specialist is a customer‑facing, strategic, and technical sales resource for Illumina’s Sequencing and multi‑omic product portfolios. The role supports a team of account managers in achieving regional sales objectives and closely monitors market and competitor activities.

Responsibilities
  • Works closely with marketing, Territory Account Managers, Inside Sales Reps, other specialists and District Sales Managers to support strategic and revenue goals.
  • Assists District Sales Managers and Territory Account Managers with developing yearly and quarterly territory plans, including target markets, strategy, sales tactics, and new customer approaches.
  • Regularly meets with customers individually and as part of an Illumina team.
  • Prepares and presents compelling technical seminars on Illumina Sequencing product lines and applications.
  • Develops long‑term customer relationships as a trusted consultant, connecting customers with internal teams when appropriate.
  • Ensures that the sales team receives training on all relevant technical, product, method, and application information.
  • Represents the company professionally, scientifically, and ethically at all times.
Technical Expertise
  • Leverages technical knowledge to further sales.
  • Becomes an expert on new Illumina innovations and products, often within a few days of launch.
  • Reads, understands, and communicates current scientific and clinical research.
  • Maintains a broad knowledge of the market environment, competition, industry trends, and third‑party methods and applications.
  • Regularly trains others on products, methods, and markets.
Collaboration
  • Assists with and develops workshops, seminar series, and other marketing activities as required.
  • Distinguishes between regular sales and business development opportunities, involving appropriate internal partners.
  • Proactively uses and supports the expanded network of national and global sequencing specialists.
  • Coordinates and communicates strategic business plans to managers and internal stakeholders.
  • Advises internal teams with deep product, customer, market, and application knowledge.
  • Participates in customer‑facing company events such as conferences and user group meetings.
  • Leads without authority, maintains positivity, and inspires peers, customers, and collaborators with a passion for Illumina technology.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or 3 years and a Master’s degree, or a PhD without experience; equivalent work experience is acceptable.
  • BA/BS, MS, or equivalent degree in Life/Biological Sciences required. Ph.D. or Master’s in Biological Sciences, Genetics, Genomics, or related field highly desired. MBA is a plus.
  • Technological expert on Next Generation Sequencing and multi‑omic applications, basic informatics, and the clinical and research sequencing markets.
  • Customer‑facing sales or support experience in Life Sciences or Genomics preferred.
  • Presentation experience; capable of delivering persuasive messages by integrating sales and technical acumen to audiences at different levels.
  • Quick learner, independent, and able to maintain deep current knowledge of multi‑omics and sequencing applications.
  • Highly self‑motivated, adaptable, and a strong team player with excellent time management, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Driven to win business and establish long‑term customer relationships.
  • Will travel ~50% within territory, with additional trips outside territory.
Compensation & Benefits

The estimated base salary range for the Sr Sequencing Sales Specialist role in the United States is $98,400 – $147,600. Compensation is based on qualifications, location, internal equity, and market data. Eligible employees may receive variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and equity. Benefits include genomics sequencing access, family planning, health/dental/vision, retirement, and paid time off.
