Function as a Registered Nurse to provide safe and therapeutic care and coordination of services through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Responsible for managing the assigned nursing unit(s) on a shift basis to provide safe, efficient, and quality patient care. Implement unit programs to meet specific patient care needs.
Essential Job Functions- Complete initial nursing admission assessment form and transfer information to the initial treatment plan.
- Complete the admission process, including obtaining charts, communicating with health information staff, and utilizing the ROI process.
- Complete patient transfer process, including sending screening and appropriate documentation to other units/facilities, assigning nursing unit staff for transfer, informing patient of transfer, and completing appropriate transfer forms.
- Participate in comprehensive report at shift change.
- Utilize management of assaultive behavior techniques when intervening with a potentially aggressive or assaultive patient.
- Collaborate with Charge Nurse/Nurse Manager on complex nursing care issues and concerns.
- Follow current nursing standards, procedures, protocols utilizing current forms.
- Discharge patients and ensure that discharge and discharge medication orders are written and processed correctly before the patient leaves. Complete and sign the discharge note.
- Demonstrate respect for patient rights and maintain confidentiality per agency policy.
- Provide safety and comfort for patients following nursing standards, procedures, protocols, and treatment orders within scope of practice.
- Follow agency and nursing infection control policies and procedures.
- Administer medications and document patient’s response following nursing procedures.
- Complete and document medication teaching for patients and their significant others during hospitalization and prior to discharge.
- Perform medical treatments and/or orders (e.g., phlebotomy, immunizations, EKG, TB testing, etc.).
- Assess patient’s medical status and refer as necessary.
- Prioritize RN responsibilities independently or with supervision based on patient care needs, unit milieu, and staff availability.
- Monitor interactions between staff and patients/families; intervene and mediate immediately if necessary.
- Hold responsibility for a patient load including ongoing assessment, mediation management, withdrawal per procedures/orders.
- Rotate to the Charge Nurse role as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Must work at least three shifts per month, one being a weekend shift.
- Must work at least one major and one minor holiday per calendar year.
- Washington State License as a Registered Nurse.
- BLS certified.
- Minimum high school diploma.
- Two or more years of experience in psychiatric nursing required.
- One year of experience in an acute care setting preferred.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary setting respecting others' knowledge and experience.
- Tolerant of the stress of an acute care setting.
- Able to interact with patients with sensitivity, tact and respect, and firmness when necessary.
- Knowledge of theories of human behavior, personality development, and psychological and physical causes of mental disorders.
- Familiarity with Washington Administrative Code regulations and professional standards governing the treatment of mentally ill patients.>
Direct nursing care requires the ability to lift, push, pull, twist, stoop, and lift up to 50 lbs without assistance. Work environment is typical of office settings with normal background noise, telephone use, and personal interruptions. Duties may involve exposure to hazardous materials such as body fluids and needle sticks.
