Our mission is to increase access to healthful food and strengthen communities by empowering neighbors to share in the harvest and care of city‑grown produce. We envision joyful communities that see every fruit tree as an abundant resource which contributes to a just food system and enhances the well‑being of people, community networks, habitat, and our changing climate.

In this position, Portland Fruit Tree Project partners with Harvest Against Hunger through the Harvest VISTA Program, a program incubator and catalyst that utilizes a team of Ameri Corps members to build sustainable, community food security programs. Programs include gleaning projects, regional food security assessments, or expanding community‑run gardens. Ameri Corps members serve for one year, engaging in activities such as strengthening volunteer recruitment systems, creating systems to collect data and evaluate programs, and developing a communication plan.

The program engages the broader community in creating long‑term solutions to food insecurity, providing members with hands‑on experience in community development and food systems while making a meaningful lasting impact.

• Strengthen volunteer and outreach strategies.
• Build capacity by improving existing systems and processes, enhancing recruitment, retention, and recognition efforts for volunteers.
• Evaluate and improve the progress of systems built, pilot and create systems and procedures for new pruning and food preservation work.
• Continue to develop outreach materials.
