Description:

King County has established the Executive Climate Office (ECO) to elevate and accelerate the County's commitment, coordination, and ability to deliver on climate action internally and in partnership with cities and partners. Since being established in 2023, the ECO has grown to over 20 staff, fellows, and interns, and has secured over $60M in grants. ECO seeks to fill a Climate Preparedness Coordinator position to support the Climate Preparedness section of King County's Strategic Climate Action Plan (SCAP).

The Climate Preparedness Specialist will collaborate with the ECO Climate Preparedness Team to implement and monitor progress on initiatives that help communities prepare for climate impacts. Responsibilities include researching climate topics, developing workplans, and tracking progress. The office prioritizes inclusion and justice, supporting frontline communities historically excluded from environmental efforts.

This temporary position is funded until December 31, 2025, with potential extension. It reports to the Climate Preparedness Manager of ECO.

Responsibilities:

  • Supporting Implementation of SCAP
    • Research and implement climate preparedness actions related to sea level rise, resilience hubs, and wildfire risk reduction, including:
    • Developing sea level rise strategies and supporting cross-jurisdictional planning,
    • Supporting pilot efforts for community cooling access,
    • Tracking wildfire risk reduction activities and engagement.
  • Work with agency staff to track progress on climate actions and performance measures.
  • Develop summaries of SCAP progress and communicate achievements using creative methods like Story Maps, presenting findings as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • General Climate Preparedness Program Support:

    • Develop content for climate preparedness websites and resource hubs.
    • Coordinate monthly Climate Action Talks, including scheduling and materials.
    • Support development of interim project needs related to climate topics.

    Qualifications:

    • At least two years of experience in climate-related roles or equivalent.
    • Experience developing project recommendations based on current climate research.
    • Knowledge of regional climate impacts.
    • Support for justice, inclusion, and equity initiatives.
    • Experience with project workplans, reporting, and virtual collaboration.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects and adapt to changing priorities.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
    • Strong systems thinking, organizational skills, and creativity.
    • Excellent communication skills with diverse audiences.

    Preferred:

    • Technical knowledge of regional climate impacts.
    • Experience framing climate and equity topics for varied audiences.
    • Experience working with diverse communities, including limited English speakers, immigrants, refugees, and BIPOC populations.
