Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Set Up Machinist to join our advanced CNC prototype and job shop. This role is critical to our high-mix, varying-volume operations, requiring precision setup work on CNC mills and lathes to support our diverse manufacturing needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Set up and prepare CNC mills and lathes for production runs following detailed setup sheets
  • Interpret and execute complex engineering drawings with a strong understanding of GD&T (Geometric - Dimensioning and Tolerancing)
  • Select and install appropriate tooling, fixtures, and work-holding devices
  • Verify machine calibration and perform first article inspections
  • Make necessary adjustments to ensure parts meet specifications and tolerances
  • Document setup procedures and maintain accurate records in our MES (Manufacturing Execution System)
  • Collaborate with programmers and operators to optimize setups for efficiency and quality
  • Troubleshoot setup-related issues and implement corrective actions
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area following safety protocols
Required Qualifications
  • 6+ years of hands‑on experience setting up CNC mills or lathes in a production environment
  • Expert‑level knowledge of GD&T and ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings
  • Proven ability to follow setup sheets and work instructions accurately
  • Experience with MES systems for job tracking and documentation
  • Strong understanding of machining processes, tooling, and fixturing methods
  • Proficiency with precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, height gauges, CMM)
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions regarding setups
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a prototype or job shop environment
  • Familiarity with multiple machine brands and control systems (Fanuc, Haas, Mazak, etc.)
  • Basic CNC programming knowledge
  • Experience with 5-axis or mill-turn machining setups
  • Training in 5S methodology and experience working in a 5S-compliant shop environment
Work Environment

This position operates in a machine shop environment with exposure to noise, moving machinery, and metal working fluids. Safety glasses and appropriate PPE are required at all times.
