Position Summary

Responsible for supervising the swing shift and managing the repair, modification and maintenance of marine vessels. Under the guidance of the Project Manager, plans, coordinates, manages and evaluates work to deliver timely, profitable results and satisfied customers. The incumbent demonstrates self‑discipline, resourcefulness and a willingness to assume responsibility for yard and customer assets.

Essential Functions and Major Responsibilities
  • Experienced Ship Superintendent with a successful record on the vessel type and customer assigned.
  • Production leader on projects of any size or customer.
  • Leads, manages and coordinates ship superintendents, subcontractors, ship’s crew and AITs across multiple work items and ship systems.
  • Reads drawings and understands complex technical work.
  • Ensures sequencing of work to meet key events and milestones.
  • Manages restoration and testing of ship systems.
  • Has a firm understanding of the Vigor Project Management Model.
  • Business partner with the Project Manager to execute project strategy and increase margin.
  • Manages the Ship’s Safety Plan and recommends required changes in the monthly update.
  • Ensures timely submission of test and inspection plans and checkpoints by all stakeholders.
  • Applies scheduling principles and earned value management; understands CPI and SPI.
  • Develops staffing plans to meet budgets and adjust plans.
  • Reviews change orders for professionalism, objectivity, grammar and risk mitigation.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of marine equipment, ship repair techniques, sequencing of ship repair activities, shipyard safety practices and complex mathematics applied to ship activities.
  • Effective presentation skills and ability to answer questions from managers, clients and employees.
  • Interpretation of ship repair specifications, blueprints, technical procedures and government regulations.
  • Business writing and report preparation.
  • Problem definition, data collection, fact establishment and conclusion drawing; influence individuals beyond direct authority.
  • Proficiency in PC applications such as word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Interpretation of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.
  • Manage multiple variables and resolve conflict; provide positive customer service.
  • Operate required tools for job accomplishment.
Education and/or Experience
  • Associate’s degree in a technical field related to ship repair.
  • 4–6 years of progressively complex work experience demonstrating required ship repair and production management skills.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations

None required.

Physical Demands

Light to moderate physical demands. Lifting or assistance with heavy equipment may be required. Standing for extended periods in external climates; walking on uneven surfaces and climbing ladders may be necessary. Manual dexterity and fine motor movement required for tool use.

Work Environment

Demanding and potentially hazardous due to work on or inside ships and travel around the repair yard.

Federal Contract and US Person Requirement

The position is with a federally contracted employer and is restricted to US Persons only (US Citizens, lawful permanent residents, recognized asylees and refugees, and persons protected under INA). Successful applicants will provide documentation of US Person status.
