Position Summary

The Work Authorization Forms (WAF) Coordinator administers the work authorization process and oversees the process for the Work Authorization Forms and Technical Work Documents (TWDs) for all repair activities throughout the course of a ship's availability.

Essential Functions and Major Responsibilities

  • Verifies that ship's systems are properly tagged out and safe prior to allowing work to be done.
  • Validates that all tags hung have been fully completed and hung properly.
  • Audits tags to ensure they are placed in the right location, and they have not been tampered with.
  • Accurately enters and logs tag out information into electronic database and on binders for each ship.
  • Acts as liaison between ship's crew, subcontractors and production department for all repair activities in matters of WAFs and tagouts with the goal of 100% compliance and zero violations.
  • Attends meetings and sends out correspondences to ensure there is clear communication between project management, subcontractors, ship's crew and production department.
  • Conducts training on tagout and WAF requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The person interfaces with project management, production personnel, vendor personnel and government personnel.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
  • Knowledge of NAVSEA standard items and requirements.
  • Must be familiar with the United States Navy tag‑out system or equivalent process.
  • Must have the ability to investigate and analyze information, draw conclusions, basic problem‑solving and be familiar with root‑cause analysis techniques.
  • Ability to work independently, including meeting schedule and reporting deadlines required.
  • A strong working knowledge of marine propulsion and structural systems to include the ability to read blueprints/ship system drawings and previous marine operational experience, helpful.
  • Ability to use PC and software applications such as MS Office and database programs.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of shipyard production procedures, government regulations, craft jurisdictions, ship repair methods, administrative procedures and government contract administration.
  • Ability to write understandable reports, read and understand technical manuals.
  • Must be able to board ships, enter confined spaces with limited visibility and have the ability to climb up and down stairs and/or ladders of varying heights.
Education and/or Experience

High School Diploma or GED Certificate is required. BA in quality technology, engineering, mathematics, the basic sciences or related fields or equivalent experience is preferred. The person must meet eligibility requirements to obtain a NAVSEA issued access badge. Minimum of 5 years of increasing responsibility and experience in the quality profession for a heavy manufacturer or shipyard is desired. A minimum of 3 years of increasing responsibility in project management experience is desired.

Experience including work in an ISO 9000, Mil‑Q‑9858A or MIL‑I‑45208A QA Program required.
