Job Summary

King County Metro Transit seeks two (2) Transit Vehicle Maintenance Superintendents to manage vehicle maintenance operations at our transit bases in King County. Superintendents oversee daily operations, lead teams of 75–100 tradespeople, administrators, and supervisory staff, and advance initiatives in green technology, safety, sustainability, and service excellence.

About King County Metro’s Vehicle Maintenance Division

Metro’s Vehicle Maintenance division meets customer expectations for safe, dependable, clean, and environmentally sound vehicles. Maintenance takes place at seven bus bases and a Component Supply Center (CSC), with the majority of buses hybrids, followed by diesel, electric trolley, and battery‑electric. Metro is committed to green technology and a zero‑emission fleet.

Job Duties
  • Strategic Leadership and Vision
    • Foster base culture rooted in equity, service excellence, safety, and accountability.
    • Lead strategic initiatives aligning operations with community needs and regulatory expectations.
  • Financial Management and Sustainability
    • Manage base-level operational budgets and allocate resources.
    • Implement cost‑saving strategies while maintaining or improving service delivery.
    • Promote sustainable practices and operational efficiencies.
  • Customer Service and Public Engagement
    • Primary contact for service‑related customer concerns.
    • Enhance resource efficiency and customer experience.
    • Promote a culture of high‑quality service delivery.
  • Collaboration and Organizational Coordination
    • Collaborate across departments to align operations with agency goals.
    • Update senior leadership on performance and recommendations.
  • Crisis Management and Problem Solving
    • Direct base response during major service disruptions and emergencies.
  • Data Monitoring and Reporting
    • Monitor KPI and analyze operational data to identify trends and implement improvements.
    • Provide performance reports to leadership.
  • Policy Development and Compliance
    • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
    • Lead staff and senior leadership on policy implementation.
    • Oversee risk management strategies.
  • Organizational Development and Leadership
    • Provide guidance to Chiefs and coordinate across operations, finance, and HR.
    • Promote inclusive high‑performance work environment.
  • Innovation and Technology Integration
    • Support adoption of new technologies and green initiatives.
    • Lead integration of alternative fuels and emerging transit innovations.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
  • At least 4 years supervised or managerial experience: performance appraisals, payroll administration, team & individual management.
  • At least 4 years progressively responsible maintenance operations experience in a large public sector setting.
  • Experience leading teams in unionized environments and working with labor agreements.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead diverse teams, build relationships, and foster equity and inclusion.
  • Commitment to equity and social justice in leadership practices.
  • Success in managing operations, setting strategic direction, and guiding change.
  • Experience managing budgets, performance metrics, and implementing cost‑saving measures.
  • Knowledge of vehicle maintenance operations, fleet management principles, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance.
  • Strong analytical and decision‑making skills; ability to lead under pressure.
  • Excellent communication skills – presenting to senior leadership and engaging stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with maintenance management systems, data reporting tools, and emerging vehicle technologies (electric buses, automated diagnostics).
