TheOpportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 to support the safe and efficient movement of goods, services, and people throughout the area. This position performs a variety of highway and right of way maintenance duties, including cleaning, maintaining, and repairing facilities at the Schrag, Sprague Lake, Hatton, Telford, and Keller Ferry rest areas. The selected candidate will be responsible for maintaining clean, functional, and safe public facilities for travelers.
This role also requires effective communication both within the work group and with external customers and partners.
Employees will work in a park‑like setting around the traveling public. This position involves exposure to hazards such as sharps, cleaning chemicals, and working in all weather conditions, as well as regular interaction with members of the public.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 will:
- Clean and disinfect restrooms, including toilets, sinks, urinals, partitions, floors, and walls.
- Stock restroom supplies by keeping soap, toilet paper, and seat cover dispensers full.
- Collect litter and empty litter barrels daily throughout rest areas and surrounding grounds.
- Maintain cleanliness of rest area facilities by dusting furniture, ledges, and cleaning windows as needed.
- Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, entrances, and walkways to ensure safe public access.
- Service and maintain equipment such as gas trimmers, leaf blowers, and mowing tools.
- Mow and maintain landscaped areas, including pruning trees and shrubs and repairing irrigation systems.
- Maintain fuel island and maintenance building areas by cleaning grounds, emptying trash, removing snow, and restocking paper towels.

- A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state‑owned vehicles.
- First Aid card or obtain within 6 months of hire date.
- Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain.
- Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Maintenance Experience / Technical
Skills:
Demonstrated ability to perform maintenance activities in a related field of work, applying safe work practices, basic tools, and routine maintenance methods to support daily operations.
In addition to:
- High School diploma or possession of a GED certificate.
