Maintenance Custodian

Construction and Facilities Management Office – Camp Murray, WA

The Washington Military Department (WMD) is seeking a detailed-oriented Maintenance Custodian to join our team. The ideal candidate takes pride in maintaining clean, safe, and well-functioning facilities while contributing to a positive environment for staff, visitors, and customers. This role plays a vital part in ensuring our building operations run smoothly through routine cleaning, basic maintenance tasks, and proactive problem‑solving.

This position is open on an internal basis for permanent state employees within the Washington Military Department. This is a civilian position and does not require military service affiliation.

The Maintenance Custodian reports to the Building and Grounds Supervisor of the State Maintenance and Support Services Branch within the Construction and Facilities Management Office and will be responsible for general cleaning duties, minor repairs, equipment upkeep, and supporting overall facility needs. Strong attention to detail, time management skills, and the ability to work independently are essential for success in this position.

Responsibilities
  • Cleaning and disinfecting facilities, ordering supplies, and servicing custodial equipment.
  • Electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and drain and waste system maintenance.
  • Assist maintenance personnel as assigned.
  • Perform daily trash, recycling and litter control efforts.
Qualifications
  • One year of experience in janitorial services, grounds maintenance, building maintenance, and/or construction.
  • Custodial equipment repair experience.
  • Minor maintenance repair experience.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, safety practices, chemicals, equipment, and supplies used in general custodial work.
  • Routine maintenance functions (plumbing, electrical, mechanical).
  • Awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the building trades.
  • Ability to perform light building maintenance.
  • Operates custodial appliances.
  • Operates and drives light vehicles and trucks to transport supplies and equipment, haul refuse/garbage.
  • Uses Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, etc.) to develop documents in support of program requirements.
  • Willingness to take action to learn and grow, and to meet the needs of others.
Compensation

Wage/salary depends on qualifications or rules of promotion.

Conditions of Employment
  • Background Investigation:
    Must successfully complete the appropriate background checks required for employment and to obtain or maintain a DoD Common Access Card (CAC) and a DoD Secret-level security clearance.
  • Union Shop Provision:
    This position is represented by the Washington Public Employees Association (WPEA).
  • Driver's License:
    Valid driver’s license in the State of Washington; must meet REAL  requirements.
  • Military Facility:
    Willingness to work on a Military Controlled Access Installation; must meet access requirements and background check.
  • Work Hours:

    Choice between Tuesday-Thursday 4/10 schedule, Monday-Thursday 4/10 schedule, or Monday-Friday 5/8 schedule. Actual hours start no earlier than 6:00 am and end no later than 6:00 pm, with core business hours 8:00 am-4:00 pm.
  • Telework:
    Not eligible.
  • Emergency Assignment:
    May be required to work in an alternate location with rotating shifts, including weekends and evenings, during State Emergency Operations Center activation.
  • Travel:
    Occasional statewide travel up to 5% may be required, including overnight stays.
