Job Summary

This recruitment aims to fill (2) Career Service Utility Worker I vacancies at the West Point Treatment Plant. The position is a 6‑month posting and is a transfer opportunity; first consideration is given to qualified transfer‑eligible employees in the job classification family. As a Utility Worker I in King County Wastewater Treatment Division, you will be involved in preventative maintenance of West Point’s buildings and equipment. The role is Mission Critical, Non‑Exempt, meaning you provide and maintain critical functions of county services that must remain operational during emergencies such as floods, snow, and ice storms. You will assist other staff in carrying out general preventive maintenance—including gardening, custodial restroom care, cleaning, operating equipment, and performing other duties assigned to support operations and maintenance across the Wastewater Treatment Plant and associated facilities.

The West Point Treatment Plant is located in Discovery Park, Seattle, and is one of King County’s three regional wastewater treatment plants. It is the largest treatment plant in Washington state by volume, cleaning a combined flow of wastewater and stormwater through primary and secondary treatment processes. The plant also manages 20 pump stations and 23 regulator stations and employs approximately 150 staff who operate and maintain the facility.

The plant serves as a worksite for contract management personnel and administrative staff, and it boasts a diverse workforce committed to safely operating and maintaining the facility in compliance with environmental regulations.

• Assist other staff in carrying out general preventative maintenance such as gardening, cleaning, operating equipment, and supporting operations and maintenance assignments at the Wastewater Treatment Plant and associated facilities.
• Operate a variety of equipment, machinery, and/or vehicles, including hand and power tools, landscape equipment, tractors, forklifts, cranes, vacuum trucks, backhoes, portable pumps, dump trucks, pressure washers, and more.
• Perform light maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, inspecting safety equipment, inspecting HVAC systems to change filters, fire hydrant inspections, sweeping, mopping, custodial duties, washing windows, hosing, and cleaning facility exteriors.
• Act as backup for specific gardening, custodial, painting, and other support assignments.
• Respond to unusual occurrences and assist in emergency situations.

• Experience operating hand and power tools, pneumatic tools, and small and large equipment.
• Experience operating industrial steam cleaners and pressure washers.
• Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights up to 30 ft with all required PPE.
