Property and Maintenance Technician

Department: Operations

Position Title: Property & Maintenance Technician

Status: Regular Full‑time / Non‑exempt

Direct Supervisor: Corps Officers & Operations Manager

Unit: White Center Corps

General Statement: The Salvation Army is a branch of the Christian Church, dedicated to the spiritual regeneration of all people.

Function of Position: As a Property & Maintenance Technician, you will ensure that all buildings, properties, equipment, and vehicles of The Salvation Army White Center Corps are maintained in a clean, neat, usable, and safe condition.

Schedule: Monday – Friday with occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Secure and manage all maintenance tools and equipment – tools may not be loaned.
  • Perform assigned building maintenance projects, ensuring completion and cleanliness.
  • Assist with set‑up and takedown procedures throughout the facility.
  • Provide janitorial services as needed for special events or in the absence of the janitor.
  • Use approved purchasing procedures for janitorial supplies and equipment, in consultation with the Program Manager and Corps Officer(s).
  • Make supply runs for maintenance and janitorial supplies as necessary.
  • Carry out weekly vehicle inspections and arrange maintenance, repairs, or cleaning.
  • Maintain the shop, equipment, and tools in a clean, orderly manner.
  • Keep a complete and accurate inventory of all maintenance equipment.
  • Safeguard all building and house rental keys, never granting access to occupied tenant rentals.
  • Do not enter rental houses or officer quarters without prior approval from a supervisor.
  • Learn, know, and follow OSHA and Salvation Army safety standards related to responsibilities.
  • Coordinate maintenance contracts for mechanical systems, pest control, alarm systems, fire suppression, elevators, janitorial services, and garbage pickup.
  • Repair basic building or housing systems (electric, carpentry, plumbing, drainage, roof, HVAC) as assigned.
  • For major or beyond‑capability projects, secure bids and recommend to the Program Manager.
  • Maintain separate files for all maintenance equipment and building HVAC components, reflecting purchase, installation, and maintenance records.
  • Adhere to Salvation Army personnel policy and procedure in all employee matters.
  • Recruit new workers for maintenance and driving positions as vacancies arise.
  • Assist the Program Manager with employee reviews and evaluations for maintenance staff.
  • Respond to alarms after hours as directed by the security company.
  • Secure the shop and the downstairs garage door.
  • Repair kettle stands and signs; drive kettle workers and volunteers to sites during the holiday season.
  • Report safety hazards in writing immediately and take corrective action.
  • Participate in staff meetings and trainings as assigned.
  • Accept additional duties as assigned by Corps Officer or supervisor.
Education & Experience
  • Understanding and acceptance of The Salvation Army’s mission, philosophy, and practices.
  • Self‑starter, capable of working with little or no supervision and following directions.
  • Experience or training in the building trades (plumbing, electrical, mechanical, carpentry, painting, general maintenance, construction work).
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook).
  • Data entry, including client records.
  • Basic internet skills.
Qualifications
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license.
  • Pass The Salvation Army in‑house driving test and motor vehicle records check.
  • Willingness to lift 30 pounds consistently and occasionally 50 pounds.
