The Foundation is the largest nonprofit fighting poverty, disease, and inequity around the world. Founded on the premise that people everywhere, regardless of identity or circumstances, should have the opportunity to live healthy, productive lives, we believe our employees should reflect the rich diversity of the global populations we aim to serve. We provide an exceptional benefits package to employees and their families, including comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with no premiums;
generous paid time off; paid family leave; foundation‑paid retirement contribution; regional holidays; and opportunities to engage in several employee communities.
The Institute for Disease Modeling (IDM) is an embedded research institute within the Gates Foundation. We develop, use, and share computational modeling tools and promote quantitative decision‑making to support global efforts to eradicate infectious diseases and achieve permanent improvements in the health of those most in need. The IDM team comprises research scientists and software engineers who work with a wide ecosystem of partners including universities, NGOs, government ministries, and other research organizations.
Our Global Public Goods (GPG) strategy aims to create a sustainable ecosystem of open‑source tools that empower local partners in low‑resource settings to accelerate the evidence‑to‑policy lifecycle. A key requirement in executing this strategy is ensuring IDM’s software offerings are easy to use and well understood by a global community of modelers without advanced software skills. User onboarding refers to the processes that improve the experience of a well‑defined set of users with IDM’s software and tools.
Responsibilities- Develop and execute the strategy for user onboarding, including defined outcomes and milestone‑based execution plans to exceed stated goals.
- Define user personas and implement them across software, ensuring the voice of user and feedback is incorporated in execution plans for both IDM researchers and external low‑resource‑country (LMIC) researchers.
- Act as the subject‑matter expert and thought leader on the latest advances in technology, tools, and approaches that create compelling user experiences.
- Design and implement clear workflows for documentation, standards, and guidelines with defined roles and responsibilities across the software team, covering API documentation, user documentation, code samples, and extensibility guides.
- Create guidelines for authors to produce and share manuscripts, scientific research, and website/social content, in partnership with the brand and communication teams, and provide consultation on outlines and journal selection strategy.
- Design and implement a clear strategy for internal and external information management across SharePoint, Git Hub, and the IDM website.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field.
- Advanced knowledge and skills in organization change management and continuous improvement frameworks and methods.
- Experience working directly with engineering and research teams in editing and writing capacities.
- Advanced experience in organizing, editing, and scoping research publications.
- Project planning experience to scope and deliver established editorial work‑back plans and schedules.
- Experience managing contractors and freelancers (a plus).
- Ability to translate highly technical, scientific work for multiple audiences—experts and non‑experts—across a variety of communication products and channels (e.g., presentations, reports, papers, articles, blog posts, and social media content).
- Passion for “science as a public good.”
- Must be able to legally work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
