ABOUT

THE ROLE

The Bartender is responsible for all aspects of service and sales of the bar and guest lounge area & dining room wine service.

This position works 12 hours per day or varied hours, approximately 8 weeks on, 4 weeks off rotational schedule.

RESPONSIBILITIES Bar Service
  • Mixes and serves alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to everyone on board, following Alaska, Washington, and Oregon Liquor License requirements.
  • Effectively maintains all record keeping of individual bar bills, balancing and preparing same for collection at end of voyage.
  • Increases sales by means of daily drink specials, and upselling, which may include an assortment of after‑dinner liqueurs, coffee, and hot chocolate presented on deck, etc.
  • During lunch and dinner, provides wine recommendations and service in the dining room, with assistance from steward staff.
  • Contribute to the guests’ experience by participating in events, both on and off the vessel.
  • Display effective communication and teamwork on a daily basis with bartender colleague/counterpart.
  • Gift Shop Duties:
  • Sets up Global Market items several times during a voyage for guest sales, assists in maintaining Global Market inventory, organization, and enters sales.
  • Bar and Lounge Cleaning
  • Keeps lounge and bar area clean which includes regular vacuuming, windows, dusting, polishing brass, oiling teak, and other detailing projects as requested by HM. Also responsible for ensuring the lounge is in compliance with all CDC and Health Canada Vessel Sanitation Programs.
  • Restocks and organizes bar: maintaining inventory, monitoring breakage, and keeping track of sales, pricing, and stock requirements. Works with Hotel Manager to order bonded stores, as well as organize them and follow proper rotation practices.
  • Provide a well‑communicated handover to incoming bartenders. This includes an organized bonded storeroom and wine inventory, communication needs and program updates, clean lounge, and bar area.
  • Safety & Security:
  • A member of the medical team.
  • Participates in onboard safety training, meetings, and drills, as directed by the Captain, including fire, abandon ship, man overboard, flooding, and medical emergencies.
  • Participates in shoreside training as required by the company.
  • Familiar with the ISM codes and requirements.
  • Maintains familiarity with all duties under the company Safety Management System and Emergency Station Billet duties.
  • Additional Duties:
  • Performs any duties as required by the Hotel Manager. Including loading and offloading materials, to and from the vessel.
  • The Bartender must possess the ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small‑group situations.
  • Serves as a team player.
DESIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Practical bartending experience required.
  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Good customer service skills; professional demeanor, ability to use necessary levels of tact and courtesy.
  • Detail oriented and thorough; able to follow through on assigned tasks.

    Ability to work independently using initiative and creativity to complete assigned tasks.
  • Strong time management skills; able to handle multiple tasks, set priorities, meet deadlines, and be flexible.
  • Work well under pressure.
  • Ability to get along well with co‑workers and support a team environment.
Licenses/Certificates
  • STCW Basic Safety Training required.
  • STCW Crowd Management required.
  • STCW Maritime Security Awareness required.
  • USCG Medical Certificate required.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification required.
  • Alcohol Server Training (OLCC) required.
  • TWIC required.
