Job Highlights

Are you a passionate Adjudicator that enjoys training internal team members and external customers? Is presenting information and training materials to groups of all sizes something that excites you? Do you enjoy providing training and mentorship to newly appointed adjudicators? This is the opportunity for you!

This opportunity will require the incumbent to be a self-starter, quick learner, patient, well communicated both in writing and orally, and adapt to different learning situations, sometimes on the fly. There is no standard day for a trainer, or rather, no normal day to day. There are things you will know are happening, such as scheduled trainings, however, outside of these times, a successful trainer will need to evaluate projects or to-do lists, prioritize them by importance, and complete tasks timely.

It is also the goal of the training unit to remove the fear of failure from the classroom, ensuring the success of each pupil.

This opportunity supports our goal to achieve internal consistency in claims and compliance activities.

The Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) is a diverse state agency dedicated to the safety, health, and security of Washington's workers. We help employers meet safety and health standards and inspect workplaces when alerted to hazards. As administrators of the state's workers' compensation system, we are similar to a large insurance company, providing medical and limited wage-replacement coverage to workers who suffer job-related injuries and illness.

Our rules and enforcement programs also help ensure workers are paid what they are owed, that children's and teens' work hours are limited, and that consumers are protected from unsound business practices.

Insurance Services is the largest division within the agency and administers one of the premier workers’ compensation organizations in the nation serving over 3.8 million employees working for 260,000 employers.

Some of what you’ll do:
  • Provide initial and ongoing training to adjudicators, clerical staff, and external customers.
  • Works collaboratively with managers, supervisors, and trainers within SI to ensure processes, products and training are consistent with SI claim management and auditing practices meeting the intent of RCW, WAC, and policies.
  • Perform work checking of newly trained adjudicators to ensure accuracy of work.
  • Responsible for mentoring, coaching and staffing with Self-Insurance adjudicators on a daily basis.
  • Edit and assist in writing and updating training materials and resources including online resources.
  • Verification that third party administrators (TPAs) are licensed and that individuals managing self-insured claims are certified.
  • And much more!
Required:

Successful completion of the Department of Labor and Industries Workers’ Compensation Adjudicator 2 Apprenticeship program AND one year of experience as a Workers’ Compensation Adjudicator 3.

OR

Bachelor’s degree AND three years of experience in adjudication of time-loss payments in a workers’ or crime victim’s compensation insurance program.

OR

Equivalent education/experience.

AND

The ability to take action to learn and grow.

The ability to take action to meet the needs of others.

Additional experience working with insurance claims, claims/insurance adjusting, claims investigations, disability management, claims risk management/loss control, medical billing, medical insurance, paralegal personal injury services or paramedical occupations will substitute, year for year, for required education.

Desired:
  • Working knowledge of Washington’s self-insurance system, rules and regulations is highly desirable.
  • Thorough knowledge of RCWs, WACs, case law, and policies governing the workers’ compensation system.
Things You Need To Know

To help you maintain a proper work-life balance, teleworking is one of the work schedule options for this position. L&I also offers flexible custom work schedules.

State employees who meet the qualifications will become eligible for a generous retirement package at the end…
