Interim Community Liaison and Policy Advisor to King County Council member Jorge L. Barón

The Interim Community Liaison and Policy Advisor will contribute to the team through management of a policy portfolio anticipated to include homelessness, health, and human services, and supporting the Council member in maintaining strong relationships and communicating with constituents and other stakeholders in District 4. You will be part of a team that promotes the Council member’s priorities of working toward a more just and equitable King County while delivering high-quality services to the constituents of District 4.

Council member Jorge L. Barón, who represents District 4 of the King County Council, is hiring an Interim Community Liaison and Policy Advisor. This position, beginning in mid- to late March, is expected to last up to six months, with the exact duration dependent on the successful candidate’s start date. This position is available because of a temporary staffing change and is not expected to be extended past this term.

The Metropolitan King County Council oversees the second largest government and the most populous county in Washington State. The nine council members represent over 2.25 million residents and serve as the local government representatives for the 250,000 people living in unincorporated areas. King County is the 13th largest county in the United States in terms of population. King County provides an array of regional services, including public health, Metro transit, wastewater treatment, solid waste, community and human services, and criminal justice.

Community

Engagement
  • Serve as a community liaison for District 4 by forming and maintaining relationships with community leaders, residents, and members of interest groups in the district.
  • Act as the point of contact and manage responses to constituent questions.
  • Join the Council member at meetings and events or represent him when he is not available.
Public Policy
  • Oversee, analyze, develop recommendations, and support advancement of public policies within an assigned portfolio.
  • Support the Council member to ensure he is aware of important issues and opportunities within this policy portfolio, is ready to respond to questions, and able to make important policy decisions.
  • Staff committees and manage the legislative process for assigned topics.
  • Form productive relationships and work with County staff in the Executive and Council branches, as well as stakeholders and other government entities.
Communications
  • Create materials to share our work, including writing and reviewing material for newsletters, press releases, and other projects.
  • Support the Council member to ensure he is ready for public events.
  • Recommend information to share via public-facing channels, such as social media and press releases.
As a member of the District 4 Team
  • Actively participate in team meetings and events, including staff meetings and community activities.
  • Assist with duties assigned to other members of the team when they are not available.
  • Contribute to efforts to organize community events in person and online.
  • Other duties as assigned by the council member or Chief of Staff.
We are looking for candidates who have:
  • A combination of work experience and/or formal education that clearly demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the job duties listed above.
  • Experience in advancing public policy, including development, analysis, making recommendations, or working towards adoption.
  • Experience in the public, non-profit, or political sectors preferred.
  • Familiarity with county-level public policy processes preferred, particularly related to homelessness, health, or human services issues.
  • Experience working with members of the community in District 4 preferred.
  • A strong commitment to the principles of equity and social justice.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and accurately in writing and orally, and convey information effectively
  • Highly organized and able to perform multiple detailed tasks accurately and efficiently under time constraints.
