The Washington legislature has established a comprehensive system of corrections for convicted law violators within the state of Washington to accomplish a primary objective of ensuring public safety. The system is designed and managed to provide the maximum feasible safety for the persons and property of the general public, the staff, and the inmates (RCW 72.09.010).
The Department of Corrections (DOC) has 11 prison facilities with custody levels ranging from minimum to maximum security.
Salary InformationCorrections & Custody Officer 1 (TEAMSTERS Range 45 Step J-M)
- Full‑time – $6,046–$6,512 per month
- On‑call/Hourly – $34.75–$37.43 per hour
Corrections & Custody Officer 2 (TEAMSTERS Range 48 Step H-M)
- Full‑time – $6,200–$7,013 per month
- On‑call/Hourly – $35.63–$40.30 per hour
- One year of experience as a Department of Corrections (DOC) Corrections and Custody Officer, including successful completion of the CORE (Academy) and the Correctional Officer Field Training Program.
- One year of experience as a Correctional Officer in adult or juvenile corrections where security functions equivalent to DOC Corrections and Security Officer 2 were performed.
On‑call staff may have the opportunity to work an average of 32–40 hours per week, although the positions have no minimum hour guarantee. Incumbents will be required to attend 6 weeks of full‑time paid training immediately upon hire and will be considered for full‑time permanent and/or temporary vacancies as they occur. All correctional officers, including those in on‑call positions, are provided with a benefits package including medical, dental, vision and retirement as well as paid sick leave, holiday pay and paid vacation;
provided they work at least 20 hours or more each week.

The Washington State Department of Corrections is seeking highly motivated and talented individuals for the positions of Correctional Officer 1 and/or 2 at the Airway Heights Correctional Center (AHCC).
AHCC is a 2000‑bed male facility, located approximately 10 miles west of Spokane. The prison consists of a main facility that houses medium‑ and long‑term minimum‑custody incarcerated individuals. A separate perimeter adjacent to the main facility accommodates a minimum‑security unit for incarcerated individuals with minimum‑custody or lower.
It has six living units in the Main facility, along with Segregation and two living units at the Minimum‑Security Unit (MSU). AHCC currently houses Security Threat Group (STG) members that have been screened for “Safe Harbor” at both the Main and Minimum‑Security facilities. The K‑Unit supports the senior living program established to promote wellness, improve the well‑being of the incarcerated population, reduce medical costs and improve functioning upon release.
Correctional Industries (CI) is a unique blend of business and government using private industry tools and techniques to operate work training programs in prisons and provide individuals to learn marketable job skills. CI employs approximately 575 incarcerated workers opportunities include Commissary, Food Manufacturing, Food Service, Optical, Textiles/Custom Products, Laundry and Warehouse.
Positions in barber, classroom assistant, library clerk, custodial services, dog handler, game box manager, ground keeper and horticulture. In partnership with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) MSU incarcerated workers perform work on 220,000 acres of state trust lands, state parks and fire crews in the Northeast Region.
