Financial Examiner 4 (Supervising Examiner)
Position Summary – This role is within the Company Supervision Division and is based out of our Seattle Office. The Financial Examiner 4 plays a key leadership role overseeing complex, risk‑focused financial condition examinations conducted under NAIC accreditation standards. Supervising Examiners guide examination teams, exercise professional judgment in assessing solvency and governance risks, and ensure examinations are completed accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with OIC policies.
This recruitment will remain open until February 5, 2026.
Base Pay Range: $7,443 – $10,004 per month (Washington General Service position).

- Lead and oversee risk‑focused financial condition examinations of insurance companies and other regulated entities.
- Guide examination teams in understanding insurer operations, corporate governance, and enterprise risk management frameworks.
- Exercise professional judgment to identify, assess, and prioritize solvency risks.
- Determine examination scope and tailor procedures based on insurer size, complexity, and risk profile.
- Assign work, manage workloads, and monitor progress for timely completion.
- Lead teams in identifying internal controls and risk‑mitigation strategies.
- Oversee examinations for compliance with Washington State laws, rules, regulations, and NAIC standards.
- Review, evaluate, and approve examination work papers, analyses, and findings.
- Assist staff with complex accounting, examination, and regulatory issues.
- Prepare and review formal financial examination reports for adoption.
- Identify material adverse findings and ensure proper communication and escalation.
- Confer with insurer executives, attorneys, actuaries, accountants, and other professionals.
- Supervise and evaluate examination staff, including performance management, coaching, and professional development.
- Assess staff training needs and provide or coordinate on‑the‑job training and mentorship.
- Perform peer reviews (accreditation reviews) of completed examinations to ensure quality.
- Lead or participate in special projects such as targeted examinations, limited‑scope reviews, new company admissions, and internal control or risk assessments.
- Assist leadership in implementing regulatory decisions and providing input on legislation, regulations, and policy.
- Review updates to NAIC handbooks and best practices and integrate changes into processes.
- Stay current on industry developments, emerging risks, and relevant accounting and regulatory issues.
Required Qualifications
- Nine (9) years of full‑time relevant professional accounting experience, including auditing, analyzing, or preparing financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow statement, notes).
- Successful completion of 20 quarter or 12 semester hours in accounting, finance, economics, or insurance.
- Two (2) years of management or supervisory experience in a lead or advanced position.
- Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licence granted by Washington State or a reciprocal state; or Certified/Accredited Financial Examiner (CFE or AFE) designation.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications
- Experience working for a state insurance department as an examiner, auditor, or financial analyst.
- Certified Financial Examiner (CFE) or Accredited Financial Examiner (AFE) designation.
- Active Washington State CPA licence or reciprocal state licence.
- Other insurance or information systems related designations.
- Familiarity with insurance company operations.
- Hands‑on relevant experience with insurance company operations.
