The Team & Role

This role is part of the Payments team and will design, build, and ship the financial ledger system and transaction reconciliation process that powers Gusto’s payment solutions. You will lead product strategy, prioritize backlog, and collaborate cross‑functionally with Engineering, Finance, Accounting, Legal, and Audit.

Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities
  • Own the roadmap for a scalable, compliant ledger system.
  • Define and champion product vision, strategy, and roadmap across finance, audit, and compliance stakeholders.
  • Translate regulatory requirements (GAAP, SOX, ITGC) into clear product specifications and user stories.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Finance to design end‑to‑end transaction flows, data models, and reporting capabilities.
  • Build an automated reconciliation system covering classification rules, discrepancy investigation, and audit readiness.
  • Ensure the system meets SOX and other regulatory requirements; serve as the primary liaison for internal and external audits.
  • Integrate IT general controls, role‑based access, segregation of duties, and change management into product design.
  • Define KPIs, monitor performance, and drive continuous optimization.
  • Foster collaboration and clear communication across engineering, finance, legal, and executive leadership.
  • Leverage AI and automation to streamline manual accounting tasks.
Qualifications
  • 8+ years of product management experience delivering complex financial or compliance‑focused software.
  • Deep knowledge of financial accounting principles, general ledger systems, and transaction lifecycle.
  • Proficiency in GAAP, SOX, and leading compliance frameworks.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience building transaction reconciliation processes.
  • Experience working in a high‑volume payroll or payments environment is highly desirable.
  • Proven ability to translate complex business problems into concise product requirements.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder‑management skills.
  • Experienced in managing multiple priorities in fast‑paced environments.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Computer Science, or related field.
  • CPA, CFA, or CMA certification is a plus.
Bonus Points
  • Fintech experience, especially in payroll or payments.
  • Experience with enterprise accounting software (Net Suite, SAP, Oracle).
  • Data analytics and reporting platform expertise.
  • Knowledge of ITGC (RBAC, SoD) best practices.
Compensation & Benefits

Annual base salary: $179,000 – $224,000 (Denver), $210,000 – $263,000 (Seattle, San Francisco, New York). Final offers consider location, experience, and expertise.

Location & Remote Work

Remote location in the United States. If you are based in Denver, San Francisco, or New York, on‑site work is expected 2‑3 days per week.
