Job Summary

The Engine Mechanic assists the Chief Engineer and the assistant engineer in the maintenance, operation, and repair of all vessel systems aboard ship, including hotel equipment, as directed by the Chief Engineer.

Work Schedule

The Engine Mechanic works 12 hours per day on a 6‑weeks‑on / 6‑weeks‑off rotational schedule.

Essential Duties
  • Under the supervision of the Chief Engineer:
  • Operate and maintain the ship’s propulsion system.
  • Operate and maintain the electrical generation and distribution system, including emergency power.
  • Operate and maintain potable water and auto‑chlorination system.
  • Operate and maintain black‑water/gray‑water/waste tanks, treatment, and testing program.
  • Operate and maintain HVAC and refrigeration systems.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks and keep records of jobs performed. Keep the Chief Engineer informed of all maintenance and repairs that have been done.
  • Help with engineering, deck and hotel preventative maintenance programs on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.
  • Complete maintenance and repair tasks as requested in the Cabin Maintenance Notebook.
  • Perform hotel maintenance tasks as directed.
  • Participate in shipyard availabilities.
  • Assist Chief Engineer in all bunkering operations.
  • Sweep decks, wash windows, keep vessels free of rust, and empty trash receptacles on a regular basis.
  • Clean the public restroom and general interior areas such as bulkheads, lockers, etc.
  • Prime and paint the vessel as assigned.
  • Assist Deck, Hotel, and Expeditions departments as directed by Chief Engineer.
  • Use chemicals for cleaning and ship maintenance while ensuring personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety glasses, respirators, etc. are used correctly in accordance with Safety Data Sheets.
  • May be assigned various special projects as per the Chief Engineer’s work list.
Administrative
  • Use NSE to update vessel maintenance records for engineering work items.
  • Assist the Chief Engineer with inventories.
  • Operate onboard computer using standard and customized software applications.
  • Maintain compliance of technical systems onboard with the CDC Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) and Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) regulations.
Safety and Security
  • Participate in on‑board safety training, meetings and drills, as directed by the Captain, including fire, abandon ship, man overboard, flooding and medical emergencies.
  • Support the ship’s security arrangements as directed by the Ship Security Officer as needed.
  • Follow company safety and pollution prevention policies and procedures and request guidance when necessary.
  • Assist in the preparation of the vessel for all U.S. Coast Guard annual dry docks and other inspections.
  • Participate in shore‑side training as required by the company.
  • Be familiar with the ISM and ISPS Codes and requirements.
  • Be familiar with all duties under the company Safety Management System including Emergency Response activities.
General Qualifications
  • EPA Section 608 Technician Type 1 Certification required.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification required.
  • Valid TWIC card required.
  • Valid U.S. passport required.
  • Valid U.SCG Medical Card per STCW standard (2 years) required.
  • STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) required.
  • STCW Crowd Management (CM) required.
  • STCW Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD) required.
