Reading Equity Project is a Washington-based nonprofit of Structured Literacy specialists. We help districts, schools, teachers, and youth programs implement literacy instruction and support that achieve 95% reading proficiency. Because Structured Literacy is complex to implement, our team provides end-to-end support from planning, program design, and training, to coaching and diagnostic progress monitoring. Our approach advances student skills while building durable local capacity, ensuring that our partners can sustain the program and results independently.
BecomePart of a Child's Success and Help Combat the Privilege Gap
Developing strong readers requires instruction, practice, and the opportunity to hear wonderful stories read aloud every day. Our trained tutors provide instruction, but we need your help to support all the other essential activities that build solid readers, students, community members, and future leaders. You will provide the interactions and supports that most impact the equity-based achievement gap!!
It’s Not Just Story Time"Interactive read-alouds" accelerate all aspects of literacy development, and they’re fun! Hearing stories read aloud is the best way for children to learn about the world, build vocabulary, practice inference and critical thinking, self-reflect, think creatively, and practice verbal expression.
We need 2 helpers per weekday in each K‑6 location, to read to students by age group and supervise literacy and enrichment activities while tutors are working 1‑1 and in small groups. The format for interactive read-alouds is quite simple, and we’ll show you how.
