Position: Meany Middle School - Library Assistant - .5FTE (203/8)

Overview

The job of Library Assistant I is done for the purpose/s of assisting the Native Education Program with daily operation of the library, providing clerical support, maintaining the facilities and providing assistance to students and staff. The Native Ed Department is looking for candidates with the following:

  • The 574 Federally Recognized Tribes of the U.S.
  • The Since Time Immemorial curriculum
  • Washington State’s local tribes
  • Lushootseed, the language of local tribes
  • Organizing and managing 506 Forms

We welcome candidates who may not have extensive knowledge in all of these areas but are committed to learning and supporting Native American students and families.

Responsibilities
  • Assists teachers and students locating materials, (e.g. checking out books, providing schedules etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the library is utilized to enhance the learning experience.
  • The overall daily operation of the library (e.g. opening/closing, checking in/out materials, scheduling use of equipment, shelving books, tracking overdue books, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the library is run productively.
  • Evaluates books and/or periodicals for retention within collection (e.g. repairing damaged books, recommending retirement of books and/or periodicals, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of books and library materials.
  • Maintains materials inventory and updates data as necessary, (e.g. library books, library hardware/software, media equipment and related instructional materials, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the tracking and availability of materials as required.
  • Monitors student helpers (e.g. assigning tasks, shelving books, checking books in/out, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the library runs productively and students complete their work.
  • Prepares computerized and manual reports (e.g. book/magazine orders, new book cards, overdue notices, etc.) for the purpose of providing documentation and information to others.
  • Repairs books and materials for the purpose of ensuring the availability of books and library materials.
  • Supervises media equipment and audio visual equipment area including training students on use, for the purpose of ensuring availability of working equipment for assemblies, in-services, classroom and meeting use.
Other Functions
  • Attends meeting as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Reporting Relationships

Reports to Native Education Program Manager.

  • Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: library practices; cataloging system; word processing; computer and Internet; and inventory systems.

  • Required to schedule activities and/or meetings; collate data; and use job-related equipment.
  • Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods.
  • Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize job-related equipment.
  • In working with others, problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate.
  • Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: establishing effective working relationships.
