The job of Special Education Assistant/ISE-203 is done for the purpose/s of assisting in the supervision, care and instruction of special needs students in the regular classroom or in a self-contained classroom; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior during non-classroom time; providing information to appropriate school personnel; and attending IEP meetings.

Special Education Assistant job duties vary according to the school/program needs, i.e., generalist, severe/profound, behavior disorder, hearing impaired, autism, etc.

  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the teacher to provide an opportunity for all special education students to participate.
  • Administer tests, homework, grade papers, folders and other assignments to aid the teacher in evaluating student progress and organising individual needs.
  • Administer first aid and medical assistance as required to provide appropriate care for injured children.
  • Assist students requiring support in addressing personal care needs due to medical condition or physical limitations to allow students to function in school environment.
  • Attend meetings and in‑service presentations (first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, etc.) to acquire and convey information related to job functions.
  • Confere with teacher(s) on a regular basis to evaluate special education student progress and implement IEP objectives.
  • Confere with teachers and/or parents (phone calls, e‑mails, parent‑teacher meetings, recording progress in a notebook, etc.) to provide information related to the student’s progress as established in the individual educational program.
  • Direct and implement behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders or other conditions to assist in meeting special education students’ needs, protecting safety and providing a consistent environment.
  • Instruct students in a variety of activities in individual and group settings (academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills, etc.) to reinforce instructional objectives and implement plans for remediation of students’ deficiencies in accordance with the individual educational program goals and ensuring student success in school.
  • Maintain instructional materials and/or student files/records (adapting instructional materials, checking papers, attendance, setting up adapted projects, etc.) to ensure availability of items and reliable information.
  • Monitor students during assigned periods within various school environments (rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.) to aid students and provide a safe and positive learning environment.
Other Functions
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Reporting Relationships

Reports to the building principal if assigned through staffing formulas. If based centrally, reports to an assigned Special Education Supervisor.
