St. Joseph Catholic School is seeking a mission-driven, energetic, and organized Long-Term Substitute Physical Education Teacher to lead our K–8 Physical Education program from February through May. The ideal candidate fosters a positive, structured, and faith-filled learning environment; promotes physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship; and supports the overall well-being of students in alignment with our Catholic values and school culture.
Key Responsibilities Planning & InstructionImplement age-appropriate PE lessons for grades K–8 that promote physical fitness, motor skill development, safety, teamwork, and lifelong healthy habits.
Maintain the established curriculum and pacing guide provided by the regular PE teacher, while also bringing creativity and structure to daily lessons.
Adapt activities to meet the diverse physical and developmental needs of all learners.
Integrate the values of respect, perseverance, kindness, and teamwork throughout instruction.
Classroom Management & SupervisionMaintain a safe, orderly, and positive teaching environment.
Supervise students in the gym, outside play areas, and during transitions to ensure safety and adherence to school expectations.
Establish clear behavior expectations aligned with St. Joseph’s student discipline framework.
Work closely with classroom teachers, support staff, and administration to ensure student success and smooth scheduling.
Communicate professionally and promptly with staff regarding student concerns, scheduling needs, or equipment issues.
Participate in any staff meetings or professional responsibilities that fall within the assignment timeline.
Assessment & ReportingProvide informal assessment of student engagement, skills, and participation.
Maintain simple records as needed to ensure continuity upon the regular teacher’s return.
Faith & Mission AlignmentSupport the Catholic identity, mission, and values of St. Joseph Catholic School through modeling Christian behavior, compassion, and respect.
Create an inclusive environment that honors the dignity of every child.
Qualifications RequiredExperience working with children in an instructional, coaching, or school setting.
Ability to manage groups of students in active physical environments.
Strong communication skills and a commitment to student safety and well-being.
Willingness to support the mission and values of Catholic education.
PreferredValid Washington State Teaching Certificate (PE endorsement ideal but not required for substitute role).
Prior experience teaching Physical Education or coaching youth sports.
First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
Full-time instructional schedule following the St. Joseph K–8 school timetable.
PE classes taught to grades K–8, including possible recess or supervision duties as assigned.
Hours typically 7:45 AM – 3:45 PM (subject to school schedule).
CompensationCompensation range is $125-$150/day based on experience. Benefits: A comprehensive package of benefits is offered including two medical plan options, dental, vision, life, accidental death and disability, long term disability, pension, 403(b), HSA, FSA, and generous sick leave, vacation, and holidays.
