The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified Dentist for the WA State Penitentiary located in Walla Walla, WA.
In collaboration with its criminal justice partners, the Department will contribute to employee and community safety and hold incarcerated individuals accountable through the administration of criminal sanctions and effective reentry programs. The Mission of Health Services is:

The Dentist position functions as a member of AHCC Health Services Unit and is responsible for providing and ensuring the provision of dental services that are consistent with the provisions of Department policy and WA DOC Health Plan dental protocols. In doing so, this position contributes to improvement in patient health, which contributes to a reduction in criminal recidivism.

Clinical Responsibilities- Reviews the patient’s medical condition and consults with other providers.
- Makes oral examination of patients to determine oral health; records number of teeth, their condition, position, and relationship to each other; notes type, size and location of fillings; checks condition of gums; evaluates bone support for teeth.
- Diagnoses dental conditions and plans for their treatment. Diagnosis and treats pathological conditions; prescribes medication for treatment of dental nature; renders periodontal treatments; administers local anesthetic; takes digital dental radiographs.
- Administers routine dental care and the treatment of urgent care dental problems that involve pain, trauma, and/or infection. Performs oral surgery. Including surgical extractions, within the limits of the facility and personal expertise, endodontics, periodontics, restorative, and operative dentistry.
- Determines extent of patient’s cooperation and amount of dental services that can be provided in accordance with the WA DOC Health Plan.
- Extracts teeth; removes cavities from teeth; prepares teeth for fillings and inserts filling materials such as amalgam and resin.
- Coordinates care with contract dentists and denturists.
- Refers patients for specialist care as necessary.
- Prepares reports concerning dental work and dental health of patients.
- Accurately maintain patient and administrative records.
- Actively participates in the Dental Care Review Committee (CRC).
- Delegates clinical duties to dental assistants and dental hygienists in accordance with WA State Laws (WAC & RCW)
- Participates in regular drills; subject to emergency assignments to help with security in the event of an incarcerated individual(s) disturbance, civil disturbance, or natural disaster. Assist with Trauma/Emergency Medical Team as deemed necessary.
- Actively participates in CQIP at the facility level to include monitoring quality indicators for improving patient care and clinic operations.
- Attend in-service education programs, mandatory training, and employee meetings.
- Answer kites, correspondence, and grievances in a professional and timely manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned in support of Health Services and safety and security.
- A valid unencumbered Washington State License to practice Dentistry.
- Possession of unrestricted DEA registration to prescribe controlled substances.
