About the Role
ABOUT THE ROLE Teaching Artists play an important role in SAM’s mission to create inclusive and engaging art experiences that connect art to life through thematic, interactive hands-on workshops and art-making experiences.
FSLA STATUS: On-Call, Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: SAM Education Division Contact
COMPENSATION: $57.20 per hour for instruction, and $26.00 per hour for planning and collaboration
Responsibilities- Design and facilitate art activities and lessons for early learners ages 3-5 in collaboration with SAM’s Education Division.
- Create displays, demos and visual aids to support designed art activity.
- Submit written lesson plans and materials lists for each art project to SAM coordinator for review by discussed deadlines.
- Attend scheduled planning meetings on-site at SAM’s three locations and virtually with SAM coordinator.
- Arrive on-site at least 1 hour before and after program start/end times to set-up and breakdown for each event.
- Maintain a welcoming environment that implements practices of equity and inclusion and facilitate art making experiences that is inclusive of different types of learners.
- Explain and demonstrate artistic techniques that engage young program participants.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Required Qualifications
- Background in art education and visual art. Experience working with early learners and early childhood education.
- Active visual arts practice and knowledge of a variety of mediums preferred.
- Experience teaching in a classroom and diverse settings. Ability to transport materials between the Museum’s three locations and partner sites.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and project a professional image when giving and taking information in writing, in person, and over the phone.
- Bilingual or multilingual proficiency in English and at least one additional language (spoken and written).
- Demonstrated expertise with Google and Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and the internet.
- Able to work independently and in a team setting; ability to self-motivate.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Able to take initiative, prioritize tasks, meet deadlines.
- Excellent time-management, problem-solving, and problem-prevention skills.
- Ability to work accurately with close attention to detail.
- Ability to work with co-workers, vendors, and volunteers professionally and tactfully.
- Ability to adhere to Museum policies and to support management decisions in a positive, professional manner.
- Ability to pass and maintain security background check clearance.

The needs of this role require a willingness to work a flexible schedule in support of the department or organization as self-directed or directed by your supervisor.
Work Conditions- Exposure:
Work areas are primarily inside, in a climate-controlled environment with moderate background noise. - Stationary Work:
Approximately 50% of time is spent stationary while working on a personal device. Balance of time (approximately 50%) is spent moving around the work area. Occasional extended periods of standing may be required when assisting at Museum events. - Communication:
