Job Summary
The Seattle Times, a family‑owned news organization and Pulitzer Prize‑winning newsroom, is hiring an Assistant Managing Editor (AME) to join our senior leadership team and oversee local news coverage in one of the nation’s most dynamic cities. The AME will lead the Metro news operation, guiding coverage of the Seattle area’s dynamic natural, political and business environment.
Responsibilities- Collaborate with the editor, managing editor and other senior leaders to guide the newsroom, shape culture and advise on budget, policy and coverage decisions.
- Provide leadership, administration and operational management of the Metro staff.
- Supervise editors who plan, assign, edit and publish daily work.
- Help set news priorities and plan newsroom‑wide coverage that includes breaking news and major enterprise work.
- Lead community‑funded reporting labs (Education Lab, Project Homeless, Mental Health Project, Climate Lab) – edit quarterly reports and attend occasional funders meetings.
- Oversee Metro staff’s transformation into an audience‑focused digital operation – serve online audience, publish stories at optimal times, use digital‑first headlines and SEO practices.
- Meet regularly with direct reports to guide performance, provide coaching, conduct annual appraisals and assist with onboarding new hires.
- Recruit and hire reporters and editors, building a staff that reflects community demographics.
- Ensure inclusive coverage from sourcing to framing, language and presentation, fairly representing the region’s cultural and political diversity.
- Collaborate with other departments (photo, design, graphics, business, sports, features, investigations).
- 8+ years at a metropolitan daily media organization, with 4+ years of supervisory experience managing other editors.
- Undergraduate degree or equivalent professional experience.
- Passionate editor who sets a high standard for yourself and others.
- Ability to analyze stories and make quick, informed judgments about newsworthiness, accuracy, fairness and libel under pressure and on deadline.
- Proven skills with digital analytics.
- Strong organizational and project‑management skills.
- Strategic thinking – guide newsroom coverage, set news priorities and advise on personnel matters.
- Collaborative nature.
- Must understand and uphold The Seattle Times’ standards, ethics and mission.
Primarily Monday–Friday; occasional evenings and weekends may be required on business needs.
Work LocationHybrid position requiring regular weekly onsite presence.
CompensationThe full salary range for this classification is $115,000 to $162,000. Expected pay: $130,000 to $150,000 depending on experience and qualifications.
