Legislative Assistant - Council member Rob Saka

The Seattle Legislative Department invites you to apply for the full‑time Legislative Assistant – Communications Manager & Scheduler in the Office of Council member Rob Saka, Chair of the Transportation Committee and representative for District 1 (West Seattle, South Park, Georgetown, Pioneer Square, SODO). This dynamic, fast‑paced, highly collaborative environment offers the chance to demonstrate strong communications abilities, strategic storytelling skills, advanced social media expertise, and essential scheduling and administrative duties.

The Legislative Department works collectively to realize the City’s vision of racial equity.

This role requires a self‑starter with exceptional communication and public relations skills, social‑media savviness, proven experience managing social‑media platforms, and a talent for creating compelling digital content. A successful candidate will plan and manage social‑media campaigns, launch digital newsletters, grow audiences, increase engagement, and help the Council member strengthen their influence across social‑media channels. Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational habits, discretion with confidential matters, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast‑changing environment are essential.

The role also calls for strong interpersonal skills, a growth mindset, and a commitment to serving the diverse communities of Seattle.

This position is part of a hard‑working, supportive team that values collaboration, trust, accountability, and initiative. The office consists of four staff members, and this position reports to the Chief of Staff. This at‑will appointment is at the discretion of the Council member.

YOU WILL BE MOST SUCCESSFUL IF YOU:
  • Have proven experience creating and executing communication strategies for public officials, organizations, or brands.
  • Demonstrate strong skill in managing social‑media accounts and growing audiences.
  • Bring creativity and sound judgment to storytelling, content creation, and message development.
  • Are soundly organized and experienced in administrative and scheduling roles.
  • Can manage many tasks at once, absorb large amounts of information, and prioritize effectively.
  • Can communicate clearly and professionally with community members in writing and in person.
  • Thrive in a highly political and community‑driven environment.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Communications and Public Relations Functions
  • Plan, develop, and implement a year‑round communications strategy that supports the Council member’s priorities.
  • Manage all social‑media platforms for the Council member, including content creation, posting, monitoring, analytics, and engagement.
  • Grow social‑media audiences and increase engagement through creative content and targeted strategies.
  • Launch and manage digital newsletter campaigns, including drafting original content, designing layouts, and tracking performance metrics.
  • Draft clear, compelling, and timely written materials, including press releases, talking points, statements, community updates, and web content.
  • Support media relations by responding to press inquiries, preparing background material, and ensuring accurate and consistent messaging.
  • Capture and edit photos and short videos for use on social‑media and digital platforms.
  • Maintain a consistent and strategic communications voice and brand for the office.
Scheduling and Administrative Functions
  • Manage the Council member’s calendar, including scheduling, organizing, and coordinating meetings and events with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Screen, prioritize, and respond to incoming correspondence, including email, phone calls, and mail.
  • Facilitate effective communication with City departments, partner organizations, and constituents.
  • Attend community meetings with or on behalf of the Council member and prepare timely summaries or follow‑up items.
  • Maintain organized physical and electronic filing systems.
  • Support general office operations as needed, including data entry and assistance with public records request responses.
