Job Description

Central Circulation in the UW Libraries has an outstanding opportunity for a Circulation & Distribution Technician (payroll title Library Technician 3 (NE S WFSE Libraries)) to join their team. Reporting to the Daily Operations Supervisor, the technician is responsible for the mailing, shipping and delivery services within the libraries. The role interprets and explains library circulation policies, rules and services to staff and patrons, and shares responsibility for processing incoming new Damien, rebound, and remarked items for the collections.

It also serves as backup for off‑site shelving facility retrievals.

Schedule

Regular schedule:
Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Additional days, evenings, weekends, and holidays may be scheduled. The schedule may vary during the interim and summer quarter.

Responsibilities
  • Mailing and Campus Distribution
    • Delivers and picks up books, mail, packages, and supplies at campus libraries according to established daily schedules.
    • Acts as liaison to campus libraries and troubleshoots circulation and transit problems on site.
    • Processes shipping requests and troubleshoots mailing problems, packages outgoing material, and advises library fax staff in shipping and mailing protocol.
    • Supports the receiving room—sorts and distributes books, mail, packages, and supplies for delivery to library units.
    • Performs maintenance checks for the delivery van.
    • Uses organizational, problem‑solving, and communication skills to ensure timely and consistent delivery of library materials and makes recommendations for improvement.
    • Acts as liaison with UW Fleet Services for regular maintenance of the campus delivery vehicle; monitors vehicle and is responsible for filling the vehicle with gas.
    • Responsible for shredding and recycling services in the Suzzallo and Allen Libraries; monitors use of恩容ed and acquires additional containers as needed.
  • Customer Service equivalence to a deior significance.
    • Provides complex circulation services by resolving complex problems for patrons and /or staff, explains circulation and fine policy, assists patrons using the catalog, and educates patrons in basic library operations.
    • Makes authorized decisions regarding exceptional circumstances such as waiver of fines and other policy exceptions.
    • Monitors and maintains study rooms in the Suzzallo Library.
  • Collection Maintenance
    • Performs quarterly missing searches and updates or adds notes as applicable.
    • Processes new, remarked, and rebound materials, identifies and corrects errors and conflicting cataloging information.
    • Processes media materials and maintains the media collection.
    • Manages inventory and processes items with discrepancies.
    • Records and maintains statistics.
    • Withdraws and discards material following library policy and procedure.
  • Additional Duties
    • Provides backup retrieval functions for the off‑site shelving facility.
    • Trains with other staff to provide basic troubleshooting skills and coverage for absent staff members.
    • Works together with colleagues in a team environment.
    • Develops and updates procedures for the position.
    • Understands and abides by the Libraries Personal Communication Responsibilities, communicates appropriately, effectively and positively, and participates in unit meetings, activities and events.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school playing or equivalent AND three years of applicable library technical experience, including one year beyond the entry level.

Desired Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience with word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Familiarity with Ex Libris’s Alma and Primo systems or other integrated library systems.
