Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
The UXO Technician I will support Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP) field operations for the Ahtna Former Fort Ord MMRP project. The project is managed out of the Monterey, California office with a field office on the Former Fort Ord. UXO Technician I are personnel who are qualified for and fill Department of Labor, Service Contract Act, Directory of Occupations, contractor positions of UXO Technician I.
UXO Technician I responsibilities include assisting with identifying, classifying, and locating unexploded ordnance (UXO) on-site, performing sweeps with metal detectors, assisting in excavation procedures and transporting and storing UXO under the supervision of more senior technicians while adhering to strict safety protocols and regulations related to handling explosive materials.
The pay rate for this position is $35.77/hour + $4.93/hour H&W + 4%-8% Hazard pay differential dependent on work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (including Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board Technical Paper 18 (DDESB TP-18) requirements but not limited to):
- Working in a team environment to successfully complete the project goals.
- Locates surface UXO using instrument and visual means.
- Using a variety of techniques (e.g., global positioning equipment, land navigation techniques) to record the location of subsurface anomalies, surface MEC, and other materials of interest.
- Assisting UXO Qualified Personnel with the following activities:
- Investigating for and identifying MEC and MPPEH, including explosive residues.
- Moving and consolidating MEC and MPPEH within a munitions response site if approved.
- Operating vehicles moving commercial explosives or MPPEH on site.
- Preparing UXO disposal site and non-electric firing systems.
- Inspection and documentation of the explosives safety status of MPPEH.
- Performing field reconnaissance, collection, and testing procedures to identify explosive contaminated media or material
- Perform any other duties assigned by management.
- Responsible for the operational execution of DoD, Ahtna policies, standard operating procedures, and practices that support the requirements of the project.
- High School Diploma
- Graduate of an accredited UXO-TI Course or the EOD assistant’s course
- United States Army Corps of Engineer (USACE) number and documentation indicating UXO experience level for verification
- Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 40-hour hazardous waste operations and emergency response (HAZWOPER) training with the most recent refresher prior to starting work
- Ability to pass an annual OSHA HAZWOPER physical
- Must be reliable and able to travel to the job site, as required
- Current driver’s license with clean driving record, ability to be covered by company insurance
- Pass a State or Federal criminal history/security background check (provide an Explosives Employee Possessor Questionnaire (ATF FORM 5400.28) upon employment)
- Pass a pre-employment drug screen
- Understanding of corporate and industry field practices, processes, standards, , and their impact on project activities
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on Fort Ord MMRP projects
- On-the-job training to include, but not be limited to, familiarity with the process, procedures, and equipment (e.g., geophysical) used for conducting MEC-related activities
- Up-to-date annual OSHA HAZWOPER physical
- Experience operating heavy equipment and towing trailers
- CPR and First Aid training
- Competence in using Microsoft Office products, email systems, and Windows
- Knowledge and experience with Alaska Native cultures
