Tractor Operator

Objective and Purpose of the Job

The Farm Tractor Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of tractors and attached implements to support land preparation, forage production, and daily dairy feeding operations at Serge Farms. This role is critical to ensuring a high-quality forage supply, timely Total Mixed Ration (TMR) delivery, and overall productivity of the dairy farming operations.

• Operate tractors and farm machinery for land preparation including ploughing, harrowing, and planting.
• Operate forage equipment such as cutters, balers, hay rakes, wagons, sprayers, and spreaders.
• Carry out mowing, raking, baling, and transportation of hay and silage.
• Apply fertilizers, manure, and crop protection products safely and accurately.
• Operate mixer wagons and deliver Total Mixed Ration (TMR) to assigned dairy farms.
• Follow feeding schedules to ensure timely and consistent delivery of feed.
• Conduct daily equipment checks and perform basic maintenance and cleaning.
• Report equipment faults, breakdowns, or safety issues promptly to supervisors.
• Comply with Serge Farms’ health, safety, and environmental policies at all times.
• Always wear personal protective gear assigned whilst engaged in welding activities.
• Participate in Training activities when required and perform good housekeeping on all jobs assigned.
• Perform any other related duties assigned, including any other procedure or techniques to improve efficiency.

The nature of this work may require work in hazardous environments, exposure to confined spaces, noise, dust, cold, heat, electricity and open flames. While performing duties of this job, would occasionally be required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop or kneel, talk and hear and use fingers and hands to feel objects, tools or controls.

Late work may be necessary as the workload dictates. This may include weekdays, weekends, and /or holidays. Required to be on 24/hours call-out duty.

• Minimum of 2–3 years’ experience operating farm tractors and agricultural implements, preferably in dairy or forage operations.
• Experience with ploughs, sprayers, spreaders, cutters, balers, hay rakes, and wagons.
• Experience with mixer wagons and TMR feeding operations is an asset.
• Formal training in tractor and agricultural machinery maintenance is an asset.
• Food Handlers’ Permit.
• Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.

• Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
• Working knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
• Good record-keeping and reporting skills.
• Strong tractor and machinery operating skills.
• Basic mechanical and troubleshooting ability.
• Knowledge of forage crops and dairy feeding operations.

• Good use of initiative and decision-making skills.
• Ability to work in teams.
• Detail-oriented. Good time management and multi-tasking skills.
• Aptitude for understanding the risks and precautions associated with the equipment in their area of responsibility.
