Overview
Reading Specialist - Central Elementary - for the School Year
Essential Functions- Identify literature for use in all content areas in support of the curriculum.
- Provide curriculum support and training for all teachers and continuous staff development that supports school division initiatives.
- Model and coach instructional methods in a variety of settings (whole group and small group) and provide follow-up support.
- Collaborate with and coach teachers on the use of assessment data to plan instruction; analyze school literacy data and plan for future literacy needs
- Provide ongoing training and follow-up in the use of assessment tools.
- Select instructional materials to meet student needs.
- Participate in collaborative instructional planning.
- Conduct classroom visitations and provides feedback to teachers and administrators on the school's literacy program.
- Serve as a liaison between the school and the Department of Education by attending meetings and disseminating information.
- Assist with the planning and delivery of parent workshops and informational sessions involving the language arts program.
- Remain grounded in content standards and objectives in order to facilitate integrated and concept based instruction.
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other district office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Knowledge,Skills And Abilities
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
- Knowledge of English grammar, word usage, word denotations and connotations, spelling, literature and other content areas taught.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
- Delaware State Certification as a Reading Specialist
- Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
1581 School Reading Specialist
Education3.1 Acquired the prescribed knowledge, skill or education to practice in a particular area, to teach a particular subject or to instruct a particular category of students by:
In accordance with 14 Del.
C. 1220(a), the Department shall issue a Standard Certificate as a Reading Specialist to an applicant who has a minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience with at least two years in the K to 12 classroom, and who holds a valid Delaware Initial, Continuing, or Advanced License; or Standard or Professional Status Certificate issued by the Department prior to August 31, 2003, who has met the following requirements:
3.1.1 Obtaining National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification in the area, subject, or category for which a Standard Certificate is requested; or
3.1.2 Graduating from an NCATE specialty organization recognized educator preparation program or from a state approved educator preparation program, where the state approval body employed the appropriate NASDTEC or NCATE specialty organization standards, offered by a regionally accredited college or university, with a Master s degree or its equivalent in Reading; or
3.1.3 Holding a Bachelor s Degree Plus 30 Graduate Credits From a Regionally Accredited College Or University Or a Master s Degree From a Regionally Accredited College Or University In Any Content Area And a Minimum Of 24 Semester Hour Credits In Graduate Level Reading Covering The Following Content Areas As Specified Below
3.1.3.1 Language Development (3 semester hours);
3.1.3.2 Methods in Process Writing or Language Arts (3 semester hours);
3.1.3.3 Assessment and Correction of Reading Difficulties (6 semester hours);
3.1.3.4 Reading in the Content Areas (3 semester hours);
3.1.3.5 Children's or Adolescent Literature Across the Curriculum (3 semester hours);
3.1.3.6 Practicum in Reading to include application of assessment and correction strategies, parent involvement strategies, and experience in working as a reading resource person with staff (6 semester hours); and
3.1.3.7 A minimum of three graduate semester hours from among the following:
3.1.3.7.1 Seminar in Reading Research;
3.1.3.7.2 Emergent Literacy;
